Complementary/alternative therapies health fair at UCFV

It’s important for nurses to be aware of non-mainstream treatments and therapies that their patients may be exploring. In fact, as these therapies move into the mainstream, some are being used in hospitals by nurses.

A Complementary/Alternative Therapies health fair being held at UCFV on November 3 has two goals: to educate both nursing students and the general public about these therapies. The fair will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, in the UCFV Health Sciences Centre on the Chilliwack campus. Admission is free. Pay parking ($1) is in effect.

Participants will have the chance to attend three different sessions offered by a variety of local complementary/alternative therapy practitioners over the course of the morning. Topics include yoga, healing touch, aromatherapy, horticulture therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic therapy.

"Nurses need to know about the sorts of treatments and activities their patients may be exploring. Some of them, such as healing touch, are actually being used by nurses in hospital settings," says UCFV nursing instructor Lynne Wells. "By organizing this fair, the students learn more about a variety of therapies and get a chance to help educate the public, which is another important component of their nursing education."

The fair is being organized by third-year nursing students.
