Enter the creative world of floral design

If you're searching for a new career and you have a flair for colour, you may have a future in floral design. The Floral Design certificate program at UCFV combines principles and practical skills development, and prepares students for entry-level positions in the floral design industry.

"The emphasis is on understanding the principles of floral design and mastering the techniques needed to create arrangements for any occasion," says instructor Tami Klassen.

The 12-week Continuing Education program features seven modules and a 50-hour practicum in the local floral design industry. Topics include basic floral design, wedding, sympathy and church flowers, Christmas arrangements, special occasions and decorations, and silk and dried flower arrangements.

Klassen is a local floral design consultant who draws on many years of experience in the floral design field, including once owning a flower shop, and at other times working for other florists. She has also received extensive specialty training in the U.S. and has taught floral design elsewhere in B.C.

"Sympathy arrangements are the most challenging because the occasion is so emotionally charged. The right arrangement can make a big difference," says Klassen. "Weddings and anniversaries are also very important occasions for carefully designed floral arrangements."

Applications are now being accepted and interviews begin June 1. For more information on the Floral Design certificate program contact Catherine MacDonald at (604) 864-4650 or visit the Continuing Education website at  www.ucfv.bc.ca/ce
