Enrich your summer at Hollister summer math camp

The third annual Hollister math camp is set to run this summer at the UCFV Mission campus at Heritage Park Centre.

Are you looking for a fun, interactive environment for your children to accelerate their math skills this summer? Look no further! The Hollister Summer math camp, in its third year, is ready to challenge students with above average math skills from grades 4 through 6.

"Camp participants are encouraged to explore math through the use of games and activities that challenge, stimulate, and intrigue," says camp coordinator Simon Jones, who has been running the camp for three years now, as a Co-operative Education student from UCFV majoring in mathematics. "The camps will involve indoor calculations, data collection, and outdoor activities to increase the students' interest in math and show them how mathematics is more that a required subject, but also part of daily life."

Thanks to the generosity of Mission residents Vic and Hilda Hollister, the Hollister Summer math camps are incredibly inexpensive ($20 for 10 hours). Vic Hollister, an internationally renowned geologist, and his wife Hilda, are long-time Mission residents and community supporters. In their pledge to encourage the students of Mission to move on to post-secondary education, the Hollisters have extended their generosity to UCFV in the form of significant donations for equipment, scholarships, and co-operative education funds.

The Hollister math camps will run from the August 13 to 24, for two hours a day in either morning or afternoon sessions. Registration includes a camp t-shirt and a Hollister math camp certificate. Registration forms will be available at Mission schools until June 15, or you may register on the first day of camp. For further information, call Simon Jones at 859-3738.

Co-operative education programs provide students with alternate study and paid work semesters, allowing them to accumulate experience in the workplace while obtaining their education. The old adage, "it's not what you know, it's who you know", is often the challenge for new graduates who have not enrolled in co-op education. For co-op students, networking with employers and co-workers in their chosen career field expedites the generation of valuable contacts not normally developed until well after graduation. All of this translates into university and college graduates who are hired faster, retain higher starting salaries, have lower student debt, and require less initial training. Businesses or organizations interested in Co-operative Education are invited to contact the UCFV Co-operative Education Centre at 854-4507.
