Unprecedented fourth consecutive provincial championship for four Cascade athletes

Abbotsford – For the first time in any sport in BCCAA history, four UCFV women’s basketball athletes will be competing in their fourth consecutive BCCAA provincial championships this weekend.

Lauren Alonzon, Cassi Born, Shiloh Minor, and Kalisha Reid have completed every one of their previous three BCCAA (British Columbia Colleges Athletic Association) seasons with a trip to the provincial championships, winning on all three occasions.  This weekend, they will conclude their BCCAA basketball careers with a final trip to the provincials where, once again, the Cascades will be rated as the team to beat after posting a perfect 18-0 regular season record.

The BCCAA provincials are being hosted by Okanagan University College, March 4 to 6 in Kelowna.  With a #1 seed and a first round bye, the Cascades will play the winner of the #4 OUC vs. the #5 Kwantlen University College quarterfinal at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 5.  The winner of that game will advance to the championship final on Saturday night at 6 p.m.

The BCCAA Provincial Basketball Championships event website is now live at www.ouc.ca/studentlife/athletics/provincials   To get live scoring updates for every game, go to http://www.ouc.ca/studentlife/athletics/provincials/playbyplay/scoreboard.htm

and continually hit the ‘refresh’ button.

UCFV’s men’s team will also receive a first-round bye as the #2 seed at the BCCAA provincials.  Similar to the women, the 14-4 Cascades will play Friday, March 5 at 3 p.m. vs. the winner of the previous evening’s match up between #3 Camosun College and #6 Douglas College.  The winner will play in the championship final at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 6.

Alonzo, Born, Reid, and Minor are all starters for the powerhouse Cascades who have fashioned a 54-consecutive BCCAA game winning streak stretching over three seasons.  Should they repeat as BCCAA champions, as is widely expected, they will be headed to their fourth consecutive CCAA National Championships in Montreal, March 18 to 20. (http://dawsoncollege.qc.ca/athletics/) Last year the Cascades finished fifth. Their highest finish ever at nationals was a silver medal.

The CCAA men’s national championships are being hosted in Kamloops by the University College of the Cariboo, March 18-20. (http://www.cariboo.ca/athletic/ccaambb/)
