Land a career at UCFV’s education and career fair

Deciding which career to chose, or changing careers, can be a daunting task. That’s why the University College of the Fraser Valley is presenting Directions 2004 – UCFV’s Education and Career Fair on the Abbotsford campus on March 4, 2004 (10 a.m. – 6 p.m.).

The theme of UCFV’s third annual, on-campus, education and career fair is Land a Career, and that’s what the event is designed to help you do.

“Directions’ uniqueness lies in its multi-faceted approach. Visitors to the event, including university and college students, senior high school students, and the general public, will find a wealth of information about career opportunities as well as UCFV programs and services,” says event organizer, Phil Gerard, of UCFV.

“The career fair is a great place to meet potential employers. We’ve got police departments from Abbotsford, Calgary, Vancouver, and Edmonton as well as BC Sheriffs, Correctional Service of Canada, and Genesis Security,” says  Alyson Schimmelmann, another of the event’s organizers.

“On the business side, we have Chartered Accountants of BC, Certified General Accountants Association of BC, Certified Management Accountants of BC, Envision Financial, Meyers Norris Penny, Otter Co-op, Prospera Credit Union, RBC Bank, RBC Insurance, TD Canada Trust, and Trans Canada Credit Corporation,” says Gerard. “In the trades and agriculture areas, we’ve got the Vancouver Regional Construction Association Job Centre and the Agricultural Labour Pool. In the health field, we’ll have employers from Fraser Health Authority and Fraser Valley Child Development Centre,” says Schimmelmann.

There’s also something for those looking for adventure and intrigue, with representatives from Canadian Forces Pilot Recruiting and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. Visitors to the career fair can also check out opportunities at Harrison Hot Springs Resort, Leisure Recreation Group, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, EV Logistics, Solectron, and many more.

Job-search strategies will be covered by exhibitors such as WorkopolisCampus, BCJobs.ca, and Sto:lo Nation-Community Development-Employment Services.

Gerard says that Directions is an excellent place to get answers to your questions about UCFV and its programs. Faculties and departments represented will include Community Access, Business & IT, Arts & Applied Arts, Science, Health & Human Services, Trades and the Career Technical Centre, Student Services, Student Union Society, Athletics, Library, Theatre, Health Sciences, Agriculture, Coastal Pacific Aviation, International Education, and Continuing Studies.

Other attractions include a fascinating keynote presentation by SFU professor Gail Anderson on forensic investigation called ‘CSI’ meets Directions 2004 –A Murderous Career. There will also be a CareerTalk where UCFV will bring together celebrities with UCFV alumni to talk about careers and what it takes to be a leader today. The discussion will be facilitated by TheatreSports’ Dan Joffre and Nancy Robertson (who can also be seen on CTV’s newest show, Corner Gas!). Improv comedy will follow the discussion forum.

Sponsors of this major event include Envision Financial, the Abbotsford News, the Chilliwack Progress, and Star FM. There will also be free draws for a new computer from Microserve and a $500 Sevenoaks shopping spree.

The action kicks off at 10 a.m., Thurs., March 4 in the gym of UCFV’s Student Activity Centre on the UCFV Abbotsford campus. For more information and a full schedule, visit www.ucfv.ca/directions
