Scholarships for Students with a Visual Impairment

Robinson and Buckland Memorial Scholarship
This award provides financial assistance to legally blind students in order to encourage full-time post-secondary studies.

F.J.L. Woodcock/Sir Arthur Pearson Association of the War-Blinded Scholarships

This award was established to assist students who have no more than 20/70 vision after corrections and who are continuing either their vocational or academic education. Candidates must have a high degree of motivation and a reasonable level of achievement. They must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and be enrolled full-time at a Canadian college, university or technical institution.

Judge Brian Stevenson Scholarship Fund

Scholarship awards will be available to legally blind Canadians pursuing post-secondary studies with strong career aspirations. Grants will be based on the following criteria: financial need, academic achievement and career goals.

National Federation of the Blind Scholarship

This organization is dedicated to providing blind and vision-impaired individuals with the tools they need to compete on an equal basis with other members of the Canadian society. They are awarded annually at the National Federation of the Blind: Advocates for Equality Convention. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community and extra curricular activities.

Wayne and Walter Gretzky Scholarship for the Blind Youth of Canada

In honor of their outstanding commitment to the young blind Canadians, the Wayne and Walter Gretzsky Scholarship Foundations was established in 1996. This permanent foundation with present scholarships on the annual basis to eligible blind and visually impaired students studying or planning to study and a post-secondary level. All scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community and financial need. Applicants will be expected to have achieved a high academic standing and to have exhibited superior intellectual ability and judgment.

Scholarships for Students with a Hearing Impairment

Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf Scholarship Awards

These scholarships are open to American and Canadian students who were born with a profound or severe hearing impairment or those who have lost their hearing before acquiring language skills and have been accepted in any field of study who attend any accredited educational institution.
Value: $500-$1000

Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (CHHA) Scholarship Program

The Scholarship Program will accept applications from any hard of hearing, deafened or oral deaf students registered in a full-time program at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

Frank Algar Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was created in 2004 by generous contribution from the Algar family. Frank Algar was a strong advocate of the rights of the hard of hearing people and the disabled people in general. He had great faith in young people and working diligently on their behalf. This scholarship is a testimony of his unwavering faith. Applications will be accepted fro many hard of hearing, deafened or oral deaf student registered in a full-time program at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

Sertoma Scholarship for Deaf or Hard of Hearing

These scholarships are for hard of hearing or those with communicative disorders. Available for citizens of the U.S. and Canada. Minimum 3.2 GPA required.

Province of British Columbia International Year of Disabled Persons Bursary

Established in 1981 to recognize the International Year of Disabled Persons, several annual bursaries are available to assist students with disabilities. Recipients are determined on the basis of both financial need and academic merit. To be eligible for this bursary a student must be a resident of BC and a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant. The term ‘disabled’ includes hearing, visual, or mobility impairments.

Don Vaux Scholarship

Established in memory of Don Vaux, who worked for the BC Division of the Canadian Paraplegic Association as a rehabilitation counselor. This scholarship is available to a disabled person to further his/her vocational or academic training and is to be used specifically for tuition, tools, equipment or books.

June Opie Fellowship

The award is available to citizens and permanent residents of Australia, Canada and New Zealand and is designed as an incentive for students of high academic achievement who have a severe disability. It is intended for those who plan to undertake graduate study with a view to prepare themselves for a role in the professions, in politics, or more particularly, in university teaching and research and who have a disability issues as a continuing interest. This award is made to enable the recipient to secure such assistance, by travel, by the preparation of computer software, or by other means as will facilitate effective study and preparation for the future.

Mattinson Endowment Fund Scholarship

The scholarship encourages Canadian students with a disability to pursue university students with the objective of obtaining a first university degree. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or have lived in Canada for at least two years as permanent residents. They must be entering or currently enrolled in a first undergraduate degree program. Al disciplines are eligible. A disability is defines as a functional limitation resulting from physical, sensory or mental impairment that, for an indefinite period, affects the ability of the students to perform the activities necessary to participate full in post-secondary learning.

Carol Thompson Memorial Fund Scholarship for Students with Learning Disabilities

To recognize an individual with a learning disability, who, through effort and perseverance, is seeking to use his or her potential to its maximum. To encourage Canadian students with a learning disability to pursue college, private vocational school or an undergraduate program at a Canadian university.

Donald Cummings Apprenticeship and Industry Training Scholarship for Students with Learning Disabilities

To encourage Canadians with learning disabilities to pursue an apprenticeship or occupational training program for a career in the trade area. This training scholarship is designed to recognize trainees with a learning disability in a trade, or in a designated occupation.

The Joanna Townsend Applied Arts Scholarship

Awarded to a Canadian student with learning disabilities who demonstrates an interest in the pursuing an education and/or career in an of the various applied arts programs including the performance of music (instrumental or vocal), drama, dance and the creativity of visual arts such as fine art (sculpture, painting), illustrations, including animation, film and graphic design.

Scholarships for Students with Mental Health Difficulties

Canadian Mental Health Association BC Division Lorne Educational Fund

This award is designed to encourage and enable people with mental illnesses to pursue goal oriented job skills/training at the post-secondary level. Applicants must have a history of mental illness and must currently be participating in some form of therapeutic support. The applicant must also have an identified job goal and demonstrate a need for financial aid.

Offers a scholarship for a physically disabled student at the post-secondary level in Canada. This scholarship is granted annually in memory of the late Morton Copnick and Craig Hilliard though a fund endowed by members of their families.

This bursary was formed after Rick Hansen’s World Tour, to honor his achievements. It will be awarded annually to one or more students at the post-secondary level. Winners must be Canadian citizens and show financial need.

John MacNeal Scholarships

Established by John MacNeal, who became a paraplegic in 1953 following a logging accident. Upon retirement and the sale of his mill, he donated funds to establish an annual scholarship to assist with education and/or in recognition of academic endeavors.
