PEER TUTORING SERVICE

"Helping Fellow Students Develop Their Academic Writing"

The objective of this service is to connect successful student writers with those who are experiencing difficulty writing within academic expectations.

The Tutors

1. Tutors are students enrolled at UCFV in their third and fourth years of their English major or minor.
2. Tutors have displayed a firm understanding of academic writing.
3. Only tutors who have been recommended by at least one instructor will be approved by ESA.
4. The tutors have completed a training seminar with at least two instructors.
5. Tutors are available to students at pre-established times.

Why Should You Choose an ESA Tutor?

1. When students hire tutors from posted advertising, students have no easy way of  determining the quality of the tutoring offered.  By choosing ESA tutors, they can be assured that the tutors they hire have a background in the principles of academic writing.
2. If ESA tutors are unable to answer questions, ESA has a backup system of tutors and instructors.
3. If a problem develops between students and tutors, students can come to the ESA to seek resolution.

Why Would Instructors Recommend This Service?

1. Instructors can be assured that the tutors are qualified for their role and have been recommended by at least one UCFV English instructor.
2. The tutor and client do not work in isolation but are participants in a tutoring program.
3. Students who choose an ESA tutor are advised to inform their instructors.
4. If a problem does develop between instructors and tutors, instructors can approach ESA.
5. Though this service is independent from the English Department., it regularly seeks the Department’s input.

Potential Clientele

This service is intended primarily for students who are experiencing difficulties with academic writing. These difficulties may be due to their inexperience with academic writing or to gaps in their education. Students from every discipline are welcome, but tutors have particular competencies in essay writing.

Policies

This is a tutoring service. It is not an editing service.  Students and tutors will work together with assignments.

1. The tutors’ focus is to help students develop their academic writing.
2. Tutors have knowledge of key aspects of grammar and syntax, but are not experts.
3. The tutors can help on specific papers, but the papers must be products of students’ own ideas and writing.  ESA tutors will not rewrite essays.
