What is Poetry Slam?
In short, poetry slam is competitive poetry which is judged with audience participation. It is a bit like watching a street performance; often edgy, it can be raucous and/or raw, but always entertaining.
Participants are given three minutes to present their original poem. No props are allowed, but the voice can be used to full affect by song, grunts, lip vibrations, and any other sound that may help to set the mood or deliver the message. The audience then are able to weigh in on the performance. Clapping, stomping, roaring, table thumping and/or laughter on the part of the audience are all encouraged.
