Submission guidelines

The Louden Singletree magazine accepts two submission types — literature and visual art pieces — and each has their own set of guidelines for submission.

To ensure your work will be reviewed by the Louden Singletree editorial committee, please follow the submission guidelines below.

If you are a current UFV student, member of the UFV staff or faculty, or a member of the UFV alumni association, you are invited to submit your work.

Third-party or previously published works will not be considered, that includes any work previously published on other websites, blogs, and/or social media.

Literature submission guidelines

Please ensure that the following guidelines are followed or your documents will be returned to you rather than submitted:

Document types

Submitted files must be in MS Word document (.doc or .docx). Files should be named according to the following convention: “First initial Last Name Title”, ie: JSmithFlowersarePretty.doc.

Submission format

The Louden Singletree accepts original, unpublished fiction and non-fiction and poetry.

  • Please use 12-point Times New Roman font.
  • Text should be single-spaced. Exceptions are made for structural poetry.
  • To assist in adjudicative neutrality, please do not indicate your name anywhere else in the document.
  • You may provide a description of your work or artist statement at the beginning of your document, however, this is not required.

Note: Please expect some copy-editing if your submission is chosen for publication. However, to ensure your piece is selected, be sure to proofread and avoid any grammar errors to the best of your ability.

Visual arts submission guidelines

Visual Arts submissions are comprised of two parts:

  1. An artist statement of approximately 200-500 words
  2. A visual image

  • Include your artist statement (approximately 200-500 words) at the beginning of your document and use 12-point Times New Roman font, single-spaced.
  • Submitted images may be drawings, paintings, photographs, documentation photographs of three dimensional work, graphic stories/excerpts from graphic novels* (of up to four pages) or mixed media. Both colour and black & white submissions are accepted.
  • To assist in adjudicative neutrality, please do not indicate your name anywhere else in the document.

*Please note that due to printing costs, full-colour graphic submissions might be printed in grayscale and should be rendered compatible for such a possibility.

If your submission is chosen for publishing, we will contact you and have you send us a fresh copy of your image file. The visual art files selected for publishing must be in .jpeg format and able to be reduced to 8 1/2" x 14" or smaller (absolutely no less than 300 dpi). This will ensure your piece is printed at the highest quality possible.

Lacey Hall UFV Alumni English

After graduating from UFV, I was hired as assistant to the Dean of Arts at Kwantlen Polytechnic University; I believe that the experience of taking an Honours major was a great asset to me in my interview as I was able to demonstrate exceptional work ethic, the ability to work closely on projects, and collaborate with others
