The University Foundation Program (UFP) is an advanced level academic preparation program that combines ESL and academic credit courses. This program is for dedicated, university-bound students and is designed to help students make the transition from ESL to full-time academic programs.
The program consists of 2 levels: Foundation I and Foundation II. New students are placed into each level depending on their proficiency levels determined by a language assessment. Students already in the UFV ESL program may apply to enter Foundation I once they complete Level 60 in ESL. They may apply to Foundation II once they complete Foundation I or Level 70 in ESL.
The program provides students with the English upgrading courses needed to meet academic program requirements as well as the support needed as they begin taking selected university courses. Motivated students can progress quickly and can complete up to five academic program courses as well as their UFV English Language requirement over the two semesters.
The number of academic or pre-college courses a student can choose is dependent on their grade point average (GPA). Students are expected to maintain good grades and complete the required English core courses at each level. See the Academic Calendar for complete details.
