This fall, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) National Event is being held in Vancouver, with a mandate to “engage the Canadian public and provide education about the history of the residential schools system, the experience of former students and their families, and the ongoing legacies of the institutions within communities.”

Recognizing their role in education, awareness, and reconciliation in regards to the recent history of the residential school system and its legacy, universities have participated in recent TRC events. At its June 21 meeting, the UFV Senate approved the suspension of classes for Wed, Sept 18 and their replacement with educational events and learning opportunities regarding residential schools and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
