Lenore Newman wins UFV Research Excellent Award
Academia, applied research, and activism are all connected in the eyes of Dr. Lenore Newman.
When she accepted the role of Canada Research Chair in Food Security in the Environment at the University of the Fraser Valley, she knew she’d be focusing on research that is extremely relevant to the UFV region, and on topics that are at times contentious.
Her staunch defense of the principle of maintaining farmland placed in British Columbia’s Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), a position solidified after formal research into the 40-year history of the ALR, makes her a popular source for media commentary.
Newman is receiving the 2015 UFV Research Excellence award for her success in building a core of research activity focused on food security and agricultural issues.

Media Release from Fraser Valley Regional District
FVRD and UFV to partner in environment, community planning
The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) and the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to further develop opportunities for students to work on environmental and community planning projects in the region.
Since 2013, the FVRD has supported UFV in a number of student led projects in spatial planning and environmental research. Sharon Gaetz, Chair of the FVRD says, “We are very fortunate to have a leading edge educational facility like UFV in our community. Formalizing this partnership gives students real-life exposure to current local government planning issues and provides our staff with fresh, innovative ideas to explore in regional development.”
The students are based in UFV’s Geography and the Environment program, which has a strong focus on experiential and field-based learning.
