Day of Sustainability kicks off a global study on food systems and security

“Food security is not something that just happens in third-world countries,” said Terisha Mitchell, a UFV geography student in conversation at UFV’s Day of Sustainability. There was much to learn at the event this year, and there will be even more to learn in future.

The UFV geography and the environment department hosted the Day of Sustainability on Thursday, May 7 on UFV’s Abbotsford campus, in conjunction with Aga Khan University, (AKU)’s East Africa Institute in Nairobi, and Panjab University from India. The event follows the recent announcement that UFV received nearly $300,000 for a global study on food systems.

Media Release from Fraser Valley Regional District

FVRD and UFV to partner in environment, community planning

The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) and the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to further develop opportunities for students to work on environmental and community planning projects in the region.

Since 2013, the FVRD has supported UFV in a number of student led projects in spatial planning and environmental research. Sharon Gaetz, Chair of the FVRD says, “We are very fortunate to have a leading edge educational facility like UFV in our community. Formalizing this partnership gives students real-life exposure to current local government planning issues and provides our staff with fresh, innovative ideas to explore in regional development.”

The students are based in UFV’s Geography and the Environment program, which has a strong focus on experiential and field-based learning.
