Biography
I received my Masters of Arts in Community and Regional Planning from the University of British Columbia in 1986. Since then I have worked as a planner and research analyst responsible for community development, social planning, public art, and housing projects throughout Canada. In addition I have also participated in several research projects in United States, Southeast Asia, India and Sub-Sahara Africa. I have taught at the University College of the Fraser Valley since 1988. Courses taught include urban and social geography courses as well as courses on community development and planning. Furthermore, I also co-lead travel study tours to both Kenya and Hawaii on a regular basis. Research Interests
My most recent research and projects include indicator research and child and youth planning projects. Recent projects have been in partnership with Fraser Health Region, Health Canada and Ministry of Child Development and Township of Langley. One of the most current involves developing child friendly indicators for a community in British Columbia and then drafting child friendly development guidelines.
Other projects have included:
a) City of Abbotsford Social Planning Department (2006) Municipal response to homelessness, affordable housing and a range of social issues
b) Hilo (Hawaii) and Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario) (2005) Urban revitalization
c) Township of Langley (2003-5) Child friendly assessment and development procedures review
d) Nairobi (Kenya) (2004-5) Preparation of community development proposal for the Tumaini Center for Orphans and Vulnerable Children
e) District of North Vancouver (2003-4) Youth community mapping and development project
