1) Summary of Professional Experience

I have over 20 years as a planner and research analyst responsible for community development, social planning, public art, and housing projects throughout Canada.  In addition, I have participated in research projects in the United States, Southeast Asia, India and Sub-Saharan Africa.  I have worked both as an independent consultant and as a planner with several companies including Maclaren Plansearch Corporation (Lavalin) and in over 100 community planning projects.

Current research and project focus include indicator research and child and youth planning projects.  I coordinated a conference on Child Friendly Cities funded through Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute and Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in Chandigarh, India in 2008.  I continue to work on projects in partnership with the Panjab University related to Millenium Development Goals and child friendly community planning research.  In addition, I have initiated a research project related to child friendly development in Kenya, East Africa, in partnership with CIDA and African Scouts.

I am an advisor for the Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies (University of the Fraser Valley) and also serve on the Muhanda, Kenya Community Development Committee and Villages of Hope, Africa advisory board.

My recent Canadian clients have included the City of Abbotsford, Fraser Health Authority, Health Canada, Ministry of Children and Family Development and Township of Langley.  A recent project involved developing child friendly indicators for a community in British Columbia and then drafting child friendly development guidelines. Presently I am employed on a contract basis as a social planning consultant for the City of Abbotsford.  Projects for Abbotsford over the last two years have ranged from general policy and planning related to social issues, community development and affordable housing initiatives.

I present several times a month on topics related to quality of life, international development and child friendly community planning.  I have been invited to present and participate in the advisory board of UN sponsored conference in Mumbai, Hope 2008.  I've also had a paper accepted for the International Child and the City Conference in Europe, November 2008.

Past presentations include a presentation on child friendly development at United Nations sponsored Hope conference, Mumbai, India 2005, child friendly development at Panjab University, Chandigarh, India 2005, workshop on faith communities and social planning for World Planning Congress, Vancouver 2006, and poster presentations at a Child and Youth Rights conference, Brock University 2006 and Child in the City Conference, Stuttgart, Germany 2006.

I have taught courses on community development and planning among other urban and social geography courses for approximately twenty years at University of the Fraser Valley. In addition I lead travel studies to Kenya, India and Hawaii on a regular basis. I am active in integrating community development projects into applied courses on community development and planning in the Fraser Valley, Hawaii, India and Kenya.
