Biography
Growing up in the west of Scotland, I completed my BSc (hons) in Geography from University of St Andrews. During my undergraduate studies, I spent a year studying at the University of Western Ontario, London, ON where I decided that Canada was a great place to live (and have since become a Canadian citizen!). I moved to Edmonton in 1996 and completed an MSc in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences under the supervision of Dr. John Shaw. My thesis investigated the origin of glacial landforms in SE Alberta. After a short return to Scotland, I moved to the Lower Mainland and started a PhD at Simon Fraser University in glacial geomorphology. I joined UFV in 2002 as a Geography Instructor.

Research Interests
My interests are in community-focused research initiatives in collaboration with various federal, provincial and municipal organizations. I am particularly interested in watershed management issues and preservation of water resources in the local community. I am also interesting in field-based learning initiatives. My current projects are described below:
Silverdale Creek, Mission: Mapping of the hydrology of Silverdale Creek in Mission in an area designated for wetland restoration (partnership with DFO, City of Mission and other local groups).
Nathan Creek, Langley Township: Hydrometric monitoring of stream flow at multiple sites in Nathan Creek to develop discharge rating curves that can be used for contaminant loading studies of organic and inorganic pollutants (in collaboration with Vesna Furtula at Environment Canada).
Abbotsford-Sumas Aquifer, Abbotsford: Ongoing project to monitor nitrate and bacterial levels in the aquifer with students collecting the required samples (in collaboration with Steven Marsh, UFV Geography, Environment Canada, Ministry and Environment, Fraser Valley Health Authority).
Field-based Learning Initiatives: Investigating how different styles of field-based learning can be integrated into the classroom and reporting how UFV Geography includes this as part of our curriculum (with Sandy Vanderburgh, UFV Geography) |
