Biography

After spending 19 years working in the construction and primary resource services sector throughout British Columbia, I began my post-secondary education. I completed my BA in Geography at the University College of the Cariboo in 2003 and my PhD at the University of Guelph in 2007. I taught several geography courses in the human and environmental streams as a sessional instructor at the University of Guelph before beginning my career in the Department of Geography at UFV in 2007.

Research Interests

Long before I entered post-secondary education I had developed strong interests in cultural change and development processes, which led to my participation in many humanitarian aid projects in British Columbia’s north as well as throughout Latin America and India. Currently, I am investigating how the processes of globalization influence the livelihoods of the rural poor and the condition of the forests in central India. This research uses an integrated political ecology and commodity chains framework to understand how informal institutions of class, caste and gender mediate the combined influences of India’s forest policy, decentralized governance legislation, economic liberalization and expanding international medicinal plant markets on India’s rural livelihoods and forests. This provides openings for broader discussion on community based resource management, non-economic forms of power in global commodity chains, the uneven nature of globalization and the importance of understanding the role of regional cultural diversity in the design of conservation and development initiatives.
