Biography

In 1995 I left a large national corporation to end a long hiatus away from university, gaining my BA in 1991, my MA in 1995 and PhD in 2002.  I taught at several institutions during my post-graduate career, and arrived at UFV in the fall of 2002.

Research Interests

Topically, my research interests focus on Aboriginal geographies, and the history and practice of cartography as it relates to contemporary Aboriginal land land claims and in postcolonial studies.  I am also interested in the geographies of exploration, travel and transportation, architecture and the built landscape, and political economy and globalization studies.

Research Field

Geographically, my field interests are in North America, especially Canada and British Columbia, but recently have expanded to include Australasia, Oceania, and the circumpolar north, especially Russia.

My applied work revolves around  historico-geographcal and cartographic research for B.C. First Nations on land claims cases.  Current work includes a cartographic representation of Nlaka'pamux land use and occupancy as recorded in the documentary record and the historical geographic reconstruction of Cowichan land use and occupancy on the lower Fraser River.  For more information see my curriculum vitae.
