ADDITIONAL INFORMATION |
Bachelor of Science in Nursing Three-Year Fast Track Option
| |
Fast-track is one of two BSN program options. It provides the opportunity for students to complete the current four year BSN degree in a three year time frame. It runs concurrently with the four year option. Students will be able to complete the program in three years because they will attend class/clinical experiences in the summer as well as the fall and winter.
The existing four-year o;tion will continue to operate with 32 students admitted in the fall and winter. Twenty four extra students will be addded each fall. Sixteen of the seats will be added to the beginning of the program increasing the size of the fall intake to 48. The enrolment for the additional 16 seats began in September 2009. The other eight seats will be allocated to LPN Access students who will enter at the beginning of the second year. That intake will begin in September 2010.
Fast-track students will complete their first year of the program with the four-year program students. They will then enter second year in the summer. They will continue with the existing four-year student group during the fall and winter semesters. Their third year will begin in the summer as well as their final semester. Students will have short breaks between semesters with two longer breaks half way through their program. All students will be selected to the BSN program using the current best prepared guidelines. A selection process for the fast-track option will be implemented after students have completed their first semester
Students will be asked to identify their interest in the fast-track option on application to the program. Once admitted they will be asked to provide information which would indicate their potential for success. Once all interested students have identified themselves, a selection process will be used to allocate seats. Criteria to be considered are: academic ability, clinical performance, financial planning, stress management, other commitments.
LPN Access students who are admitted into the second year will complete their program in two years rather than the current three years. They will start in the third semester with the bridge-in course and other third semester courses. They will complete the second year with the four year program students and then join the fast-track group in the summer for the fifth semester. LPN Access students will be selected to the program using the current best prepared guidelines.
There may be opportunity for students in the four and three year option to move to the other program option depending on seat availability. This would allow for students with changing circumstances to either slow down the pace of completion or increase it.

| Student Guidelines and Policies |
| |
The Nursing Program has established a Student Guidelines and Policies Manual. The manual includes both academic and clinical experience guidelines. Each student is provided with a copy of the manual and will be required to adhere to the policies. |
Support Courses |
The following support courses may be taken prior to enrolment if the applicant’s academic prerequisites are complete and seats are available: |
- English 105 (reserved nursing section)
- HSC 110: Anatomy & Physiology I
- HSC 112: Anatomy & Physiology II
- Math 104, 106 or 108
Note: Applicants require a Letter of Permission from the Nursing Department in order to register in the above reserved courses. Math 104 and 106 and several sections of English 105 are available as a general studies student and therefore do not require a Letter of Permission to register. Completion of English 105 while waiting for Program enrolment is highly recommended. |

Program Electives |
The Nursing Program requires the completion of three elective courses, two of which may be taken prior to program enrolment. These electives must be university level, three credit courses. Two of these electives are non-nursing courses and may be either upper or lower level credits (100-400 level). Elective courses should not duplicate content already addressed in the nursing degree curriculum. The second year elective must be selected from Sociology, Psychology, or Anthropology. The final elective must be a nursing elective and may be taken once enrolled in 3rd year. Electives may be taken at UFV or at another institution; however, it is strongly recommended that you contact the Program Coordinator to discuss your course selection in order to ensure elective credit requirements will be satisfied. |

| Assessment of Transfer Credit |
You may have taken courses from another institution that you wish to have assessed for transfer credit in the Nursing Program. Formal assessment of previously completed courses for transfer credit requires official transcripts and may require submission of course outlines. However, if an applicant wishes a preliminary assessment in order to plan course work while waiting for program enrolment, the student may request this assessment from the Program Coordinator. |
| |
| Transfer Student |
Students, who have completed part of a nursing degree program from another educational institution, may be eligible for access or transfer into the UFV BSN program. Students wishing to be considered for transfer into the nursing program must submit the following items for Admissions and Records:
-
UFV application form
-
UFV Nursing program application form
-
Official transcripts from sending institution
-
Course outlines
-
Letter of reference from representative from the nursing program of the sending institution
-
Letter from the applicant describing reasons for transferring to the UFV Nursing program. It should specify learning needs identified in previous nursing program experiences. |
| The consideration of transfer student’s application includes a determination of the appropriate entry to the program, availability of program seats, and potential for success. |
| Licensed Practical Nurses |
| |
Practical Nursing Access to the BSN program provides the opportunity for Licensed Practical Nurses to bridge into the nursing degree program. Access occurs into the second year of the program. It includes a bridge-in course plus other courses which make up the third semester of the program. Students will complete their BSN in 2 years as part of the fast track cohort.

| Program Policies |
The nursing and support courses for each semester are prerequisites for the coursework in the next semester. Due to the integrated nature of the nursing courses, progression from one semester to the next requires concurrent completion of the nursing courses. To maintain status as a program student, students must achieve a minimum C grade in each course and a cumulative GPA of 2.0. Students who fail or withdraw from the nursing program may reapply to the program according to the Nursing Program Readmission Policy. Courses taken for elective credit must be approved by the Nursing department. Once enrolled in the Nursing program, students are required to maintain CRNBC student membership. |
| Graduation |
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure all program requirements are met. Students must achieve an accumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher to graduate from the program. |
