 Applied Studies in History

The UFV History Department will be offering its Applied Studies program in the Fall and Winter 2009-10 terms. The Applied Studies program is made up of two courses—History 301 & 401—and together they allow students to integrate applied experience and training into their academic studies in history.

History 301 (Fall 2009) examines how history is presented outside the academic classroom, including museum & historical sites, popular print, films and television, and the public school system. History 301 is counted towards the North American breadth requirement for History Majors and Extended Minors.

Students enrolled in History 301 can apply for History 401 (Winter 2010), an unpaid practicum course where participants are placed in supervised workplace settings to apply and build their historical skills. Students are expected to spend approximately eight hours a week at their practicum placement site. In past years these placements have included:

  • Public School Classrooms
  • Museums, archives and historical sites
  • First Nations organizations
  • Community service organizations
  • Private historical consultants
  • An environmental engineering firm
  • Local politicians and government

The practicum itself is built around the needs of the student and the sponsor, and it is for this reason the program has been so successful. Because practicum sites should be arranged well in advance, especially school practicums, History 401 has an early application deadline of September 28th. Note: History 401is not counted toward any breadth area.

Application forms are available from the UFV History Department Assistant in office D3094 or you may download an application from the link below.
