Keynote Address
Hugh Brody, Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Studies at UCFV
brodyimage Hugh Brody, Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Studies at UCFV, will present the keynote address.  Brody is a highly regarded anthropologist, author, and film maker, who has worked on Indigenous cultures in many parts of the world since the 1970s. He is the author of the seminal book, “Maps and Dreams” (1981)¸ and the more recent, “The Other Side of Eden” (2001), as well as numerous other books and acclaimed documentary films, such as “Time Immemorial” (1991) and “Inside Australia” (2003).  Brody’s past and current research includes work among First Nations in various parts of British Columbia (including the Fraser Valley where the conference will take place), North America, Africa, and Australia.
In his keynote presentation he will make use of his innovative documentary film, “A Washing of Tears” (1992), to examine how films can be used to hear the voices of Indigenous peoples. Shot on the west coast of British Columbia in 1992, this film raises issues that are pressing not only to BC Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities but globally.
Plenary Session
Dr. Cole Harris, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia
Dr. Harris has been Canada’s leading historical geographer for many years. He is the editor of the 3 volume magisterial “Historical Atlas of Canada,” which won the Canadian Historical Association’s prize for the best book in Canadian History in 1988, an award which he also won for his most recent book, “Making Native Space” (2003). His book “The Resettlement of British Columbia,” redefined the settlement history of the province, and the essays within, capture different inner worlds of British Columbia including Idaho Peak, Fraser Canyon and Lower Mainland, better than any other volume.

The plenary session in his honour takes the opportunity of his recent retirement, to explore how he has reshaped our understanding of British Columbia’s place in the larger world of Empires and given us new understanding of the many inner worlds that comprise the province.  A distinguished panel of experts in different fields, comprised of Hamar Foster, Dr. Tina Loo, Sonny McHalsie and Dr. Graeme Wynne have been asked to give an assessment of Harris’ impact over his career, to which Harris will respond with his own assessment of his key contributions.
