University of Edinburgh Professor Emeritus Ged Martin will speak at UFV on the evening of March 30th on the history of capital punishment in Canada.
Perhaps ironically, hanging was part of nineteenth-century Canada's positive self-image as an orderly, moral British society, in contrast to the lawless United States. Although this aspect of Canada's past is seldom explored, some 700 people were hanged between 1867 and 1962.
Professor Martin is the former Director of Canadian Studies, University of Edinburgh and has published widely in the history of leading Commonwealth countries, Britain, and Ireland.
