LIBRARY:

The UCFV Library is the History student's greatest resource. Each UCFV campus is served by a Library; History students will find research materials, including books, journals, newspapers, government publications, and videotapes, that are essential to their success. The Library also offers an array of research retrieval services, such as electronic and CD-ROM databases and indexes, Internet access, and connections to the library collections at UBC, SFU, and other academic libraries across Canada.

RESOURCES

The UCFV Library has also produced a number of helpful electronic guides to doing historical research in the following topic areas:

  • Canadian History
  • European History
  • American History
  • Latin America
  • First Nations
  • Art History
  • Historical Geography

These guides can be accessed through the UCFV Library website, and each guide includes retrieval information (and more often, Internet links) to relevant and current research sources, such as Internet sites (museums, archives, searchable databases, electronic journals, mega-directories), periodical indexes (CD-ROM, online, print), the online catalogue, reference books, and interlibrary loan access.

WRITING CENTRE

The Writing Centre helps students with their writing at UCFV. Students from all University College courses/programs and at all levels of ability voluntarily use the Writing Centre to become better, more effective academic and professional writers. In recent years, the Writing Centre has paid special attention to the kinds of writing done in History courses in order to better help History students understand the expectations of the discipline. With this knowledge, the Writing Centre staff can offer one-on-one and group help with the most important aspects of historical writing at UCFV:

  • Developing ideas, purpose, and argument
  • Organizing material into appropriate forms
  • Understanding the role and presentation of research
  • Understanding the conventions of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure
  • Developing style, voice, and creativity as a writer of History
  • Improving vocabulary and spelling

If you would like help with a specific writing assignment in your History class, the Writing Centre suggests you reserve an appointment by using the sign-up sheets outside the doors at all three Writing Centres. You are welcome to visit the Writing Centre at any point in the writing process: thinking, brainstorming, drafting, revising, polishing. Remember, as the writer the responsibility for the assignment always remains with you; Writing Centre staff are eager to work with you but will neither guarantee you a good mark nor proof read or edit your assignment.

As well as one-on-one consultations, the Writing Centre provides additional resources for students studying History at UCFV. These include workshops on writing issues relevant to History, handouts on historical writing concerns, sample papers submitted by History instructors, books on writing in History, and computers for student use.
