HIST 412: Louis X!V and His Court at Versailles NEW
This course explores the personal and political dynamics of court society at Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715). We will pursue a two-pronged approach, exploring the intricacies of court life against a backdrop of larger political events across France and Europe. By examining such topics as patronage, consumption, ritual and display, the course will consider the extent to which ancien régime absolutism was perfected in the halls of Versailles. Through an in-depth exploration of Louis XIV's court, that quintessential example of absolutism at work, students will gain insight into one of the most important socio-political institutions of early modern Europe.
