UFV International will provide as much information as possible to program participants regarding the maintenance of health and safety while studying abroad. Please refer to the Study Abroad Handbook for detailed information on pre-departure medical examinations, health insurance, vaccinations, prescriptions, pre-existing health conditions, as well as food, drink, and hygiene.
However, UFV cannot:
guarantee or assure the safety of participants or eliminate all risks from study abroad programs
monitor or control all of the daily personal decisions, choices, and activities of individual participants
assure that Canadian standards of due process apply in overseas legal proceedings or provide or pay for legal representation for participants
All students participating in an exchange program or study tour will read and sign the “UFV Study Tours/Exchange Program Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, Assumption of Risks and Indemnity Agreement”. This is read out-loud to insure that each student attending the pre-departure meeting understands that by signing the agreement they are waiving certain legal rights, including the right to sue. This agreement acts as a confirmation of health coverage as well. It covers statement of risks, institutional arrangements, health and safety, standards of conduct, and miscellaneous legal provisions. Students are also expected to sign a study tour participant code and refund policy waiver.
In addition, our students fill out a “Student Health/Emergency Treatment Authorization” form. The purpose of this form is to help UFV International provide appropriate assistance to students should the need arise during their study abroad experience. It insures that any disclosure of information will be made only to the appropriate individuals and handled with the highest level of discretion to protect student privacy. Relevant information is shared with program staff, leaders, or appropriate professionals as it relates to student health and safety.
Flight Information and Emergency Contact Information forms are also completed at pre-departure meetings. For more information, please refer to the Study Abroad Handbook or visit UFV International.
