Teaching International Students: Resources for Faculty

In recent years, UFV has grown, expanded, and continues to do so. As a result, new and innovative initiatives, such as those undertaken to internationalize the academy, have taken precedent. More international and exchange students are arriving on campus every semester, more international projects and partnerships are being formed, and more opportunities are being created to implement internationalization here at home. While the university welcomes and embraces diversity, change does not transpire without challenge.

By no means limited to UFV alone, the influx of international students on Canadian campuses has created challenges for both students and faculty. Students face language, cultural, and academic barriers in the classroom, including difficulty with adapting to new learning styles and curriculum differences.

Likewise, faculty are also challenged to create inclusive learning environments while taking into account the diversity and many cultural differences that exist in today’s classroom. Never a homogenous learning institution, UFV is incredibly diverse with large numbers of international, immigrant, and indigenous students. The following pages are meant to pull together resources and share useful information with faculty. These resources are meant to facilitate the learning experience between faculty and students by discussing some common areas of difficulty that faculty and students face in the classroom.
