Assessment

Assessment and feedback are important criteria for international student success. Since students bring diverse educational experiences to the classroom, it is important to offer guidance in what we value regarding expectations in the assessment process. Feedback provides further guidance on how students can improve their performance.

Assessment and Feedback Tips:

  • Give students a copy of the assessment criteria and explain how marks will be allocated
  • Outline the exam/testing/assignment requirements and model the type of responses/work required
  • Try to vary the use of assessment tasks, to cater to different learning styles
  • Avoid negative feedback that does not constructively provide guidance so that a student can improve in a particular area. For example, if their paper does not “flow logically”, offer suggestions on how they can work towards achieving this and refer them to appropriate campus resources (Writing Centre)
  • Offer oral feedback to students in class after assignments have been returned, focusing on the main issues that arose from the assessment and identifying what students can do to improve their performance in the subsequent assessment for the subject
