Managing Classroom Diversity

Changing demographics and increased international student mobility have led to an increased challenge for faculty to manage cultural and linguistic diversity in the classroom. When attempting to balance the needs of a diverse group of students, it’s important to keep in mind that the instructor sets the tone in the classroom. Instructors have a lot of sway in creating a positive learning environment for all students. Here are some tips on how to manage classroom diversity:

  • Employ a variety of teaching strategies to address different learning styles
  • Consider diversity in learning styles and educational histories
  • Model consideration or acceptance of various perspectives
  • Highlight the unique contributions culturally diverse students bring to the class
  • Help students identify cultural assumptions that create challenges to the learning environment
  • Learn names and correct pronunciation of students
  • Encourage students to share their backgrounds, experiences, and how things may be different in their culture
