University Foundation program overview

How does it work?

Students that have good academic standing and want to earn academic credits early can choose to do the University Foundation Program.  Students in Foundation Level 1 or Foundation Level 2 are able to take college prep and academic courses while completing their English requirements for academic programs.

Students must maintain high grades to stay in the program. Those who are removed from the Foundation Program will not be permitted to take academic courses until they can demonstrate university–college-level reading and writing skills and have grades adequate for academic program application.

Students can get automatic acceptance into the Foundation Program if they can provide one of the following scores:

Unconditional admission to Foundation Level 2:

Successful completion of Foundation 1 or articulated equivalent

Unconditional admission to Foundation Level 1:

Successful completion of 60-level core ESL courses or articulated equivalent.

Students unable to provide an English assessment score will be required to take the UFV ESL assessment upon their arrival to UFV.

Sample first-year student

Solon, from Greece, applied to UFV’s Business Administration Program with a TOEFL score of 69 on the iternet-based test (iBT). This score automatically places him in Foundation Level 1.

After reviewing Solon’s previous academic history, it was decided that Solon would likely succeed in two first year business courses in addition to his core Writing/Grammar and Reading classes.

In his first semester (Fall) at UFV, Solon studies Business 100, Math 106, Writing/Grammar 74, Reading 70 and Speaking 76.  He does well and his Grade Point Average (GPA) for the semester is 3.33 (B+). After meeting with his advisor, they agree that Solon should take three academic courses in the Winter semester in addition to the two required courses, Writing/Grammar 84 and Integrated Academic Learning Skills 104 (CSM 104).

For his academic courses, Solon and his advisor have chosen Business 120 (Marketing), Business 143 (Accounting 1) and Economics 100. Economics 100 is only an option for Foundation 2 student with a GPA higher than 3.0 (B average).

Solon had a challenging but rewarding first year. He succeeded in maintaining his 3.33 GPA and successfully completed the Foundation program in May— which automatically made him eligible for full acceptance to the Business Administration Diploma Program.

By working hard in the Foundation Program, Solon fulfilled UFV’s English language requirement and earned 15 business program credits (1 full semester) in the process!
