The Regular English Second Language (ESL) Program at UFV is an academic preparation program offering six levels ranging from pre-intermediate to pre-university.  Please note that UFV ESL does not offer a beginner level.  Applicants with less than the equivalent of an IELTS overall band score of 3.0 or a TOEFL iBT score of 30 should be prepared to upgrade through non-credit tutoring.  It is therefore in students’ best interest to provide test results before arrival in Canada to ensure they can be registered into the courses that they need.

Each level normally takes one semester to complete. Students can expect 15 - 18 hours per week of instruction, plus up to 10 hours of assigned lab work.  Students should also expect up to 2 hours of homework for each hour in class.
  • Pre-Intermediate: Level 30 - Three core courses plus optional elective.
  • Intermediate 1: Level 40 - Three core courses plus optional elective.
  • Intermediate 2: Level 50 - Three core courses plus optional elective.
  • Advanced 1: Level 60 - Three core courses plus optional elective.

Foundation 1 (Advanced 2): Level 70 - Two core courses plus option of up to 3 electives (up to 2 academic or pre-college courses depending on GPA).

Foundation 2 (Pre-University / Bridge): Level 80 - Two core courses plus option of up to 3 electives (up to 3 academic or pre-college courses depending on GPA).

University Foundation Program: Students with good grades can apply for conditional acceptance to their academic program of choice at Level 70 of the ESL Program (Foundation Level 1).

Core subjects are combined with electives to ensure that each student can plan a program suited to their individual needs and interests.

ESL certificates

Intermediate Certificate, Advanced Certificate, Academic Certificate

Successfully-completed ESL courses can be used for credit in a number of programs. Students fulfilling the UFV language requirements do not need a TOEFL test for further study at UFV.

Speaking & Listening:

Students practice speaking and listening skills through interactive, communicative activities.

Writing & Grammar:
