Fake Anti-Virus Software

Word is spreading of a massive Web-based attack being dubbed "LizaMoon."  The result is that an alarming number of legitimate Web sites have been infected with malicious code that can cause fake anti-virus software to be downloaded when unsuspecting users visit the site.

Because this latest attack is so widespread, it is possible that more and more people are going to encounter fake AV pop-ups on their screen advising that their computer is infected.  The supposed "fix" is to purchase the advertised anti-virus program in order to get rid of the reported viruses.  Responding to these "scareware" tactics puts money into the hands of criminals while leaving your system compromised.

If you encounter fake anti-virus pop-ups, do not click on any buttons or links associated with them.  Instead, close your browser and any open applications, and restart your computer.  If you are unable to close your browser, simply hold down the power button until your computer shuts off, wait 15 seconds, then power it back on.  If you continue to experience suspicious behavior on your computer following the restart, please contact IT Helpdesk for further assistance.

For more information on fake anti-virus programs, see the following article entitled Watch Out for Rogue Software.

security tip of the week

Encryption

When you store critical or confidential information, you should protect it via encryption.

This is especially so if this data is stored on portable devices like laptops, USB sticks, or even smartphones.

Good encryption software is readily available.  For example, TrueCrypt is easy to install and use.  Best of all, it's free!

TrueCrypt gives you the option of creating an encrypted folder, or encrypting your entire hard drive.

When properly encrypted, personal and confidential data will be inaccessible if your portable device is lost or stolen.

Visit www.truecrypt.org to find out more.
