What is Database StartSearch?
StartSearch is an open source federated searching tool (also known as metasearch). It allows you to search several information resources, like catalogues, databases or repositories, from one single interface. It can search most, but not all, of our article indexes and databases.
You can search by subject area, like Chemistry or History, or you can choose your own selection of resources.
When Should I Use It?
StartSearch is a great place to start your research because it helps you to figure out which databases are your best bets. It will even introduce you to ones you hadn’t thought to try. Because it is set up to search targets external to UFV Library, you will learn of valuable resources available to you beyond the library walls.
How Do I Search It?
In Basic Search, you can either search "Interdisciplinary Databases" or select a specific subject grouping.
In Advanced Search, you can select and search one or more specific databases. Keep your searches simple, such as combining one or two keywords.
How Are The Results Displayed?
Results indicate how many hits were found in each database target. You also see a list of the first 15 references from each database. You may click on the item's title to view it on screen.
What Do I Do Next?
Once you have determined the best databases for your search, you may connect to the database and do a more complex search. Each database has advanced features which will help improve your search. Oct. 18, 2007 pw |
