Integrating Search Box Widgets into Blackboard

What is a Search Box Widget?

Many database vendors have created “cut and paste” code which can be added to a webpage, creating a search box targeting their databases. You may set up single or multiple targets from each vendor. For example, you may wish to have students search a combination of Academic Search Premier and PsycINFO.

Why would I include this on a course page?

If your course involves some type of research assignment, you can recommend and direct students to one or more databases relevant to their topic. The search box widgets bring the databases to “where the students” are, rather than having to negotiate through the library’s pages.

Please note: These search boxes work well in Blackboard, but DO NOT work in Ironpoint, as of this time.

How can I set them up?

1. Choose the database(s)
2. Identify the vendor(s)
3. Customize your targets to create your own code
4. Include the library’s proxy server information
5. Cut and paste the code into your course page

1. Start at the Search Box Builder page: http://supportforms.epnet.com/eit/searchboxbuilder/
2. Check off desired databases from list
3. Leave default search as Boolean/Phrase
4. Under “Select Authentication Parameters”, enter our proxy prefix: http://proxy.ufv.ca:2048/login?url=
5. Choose from 3 different search box designs
6. Uncheck “Show Choose Databases”
7. Click on “Create Search Box”
8. Copy and paste the code into your course webpage.

Proquest Databases

Canadian Newsstand Major Dailies (ID 12274) - National Post, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, Regina Leader Post, Vancouver Sun, and the Victoria Times-Colonist

CBCA Business (ID 14400)
Canadian trade journals, general business publications, academic journals, topical journals, and professional publications are all included

CBCA Education (ID 14401)
This collection focuses on Canadian information in the field of education. More than 265 titles are in the collection, with file depth back to the 1970s. Academic, administrative, professional, and topical journals are all included, as are newsletters

CBCA Reference (ID 14403)
Wide diversity of Canadian periodicals, ranging from academic titles to special interest publications to general magazines. The academic titles include the most prominent journals from the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and professions. Other magazines focus on opinion, public policy, children/youth, lifestyles, arts and culture, health, regional concerns, etc.

1. Start at the Proquest Search Widget Creator page: http://www.proquest.com/en-US/utilities/widgets/search.shtml
2. Enter database IDs separated by commas. Example: 14400, 14401, 14403
3. Enter our proxy prefix: http://proxy.ufv.ca:2048/login?url=
4. Customize search box style if desired (placement of logo, border colour, etc.)
5. Click on “Create Widget”
6. Copy and paste the code into your course webpage.

CSA Databases

Criminal Justice Abstracts - Crime trends, crime prevention, punishment and sentencing
ERIC - Teacher education, testing, measurement, and evaluation
GeoRef - Geosciences, geochemistry, geophysics
Philosopher’s Index - Philosophy, ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, logic, aesthetics
PILOTS Database - Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental-health sequelae of traumatic events.
Social Services Abstracts - Social work, human services, social welfare, social policy
Sociological Abstracts - Social structure, inequality, social change, social problems

The CSA Search box builder is inside the Administration gateway, and is password protected. Please contact Patti Wilson (patti.wilson@ufv.ca or Loc. 4277) to have a search box created for any combination of databases above.

Science Direct

ScienceDirect is the world's largest electronic collection of full text and bibliographic information in this area.

JSTOR

JSTOR is a full text database with strength in the Arts and Sciences. Journals begin with vol. 1, no. 1 and often date back decades.

Web of Science will search for scholarly journal article citations in Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index and Science Citation Index.

Search Banners

Not all database vendors have search box widgets which will allow off campus access.

An alternative is to use their Search Banners to direct students to a database.
