Q. What are the loan periods and fines?

For full details of all fines and loan periods, see the Student, Faculty and Staff, and Alumni/Community Borrower charts below.

Q. Do I need to show a library card to borrow materials?

Yes, you will be asked to present your card each time you borrow items. See our Library Cards page for more information on cards.

Q. What happens if I lose my card?

As you are responsible for all items borrowed on your card, it is important that you report lost cards immediately to the library. There is a replacement fee of $10 for a new card.

Q. Where can I return my library materials?

All items other than Reserve items can be returned at any UFV campus library. Reserve items must be returned to the library from which they were checked out. Items may be returned in the book return slot at the circulation desks (during opening hours). During closed hours, external bookdrops are available at the Chilliwack and Abbotsford campuses.

·         Chilliwack: external bookdrop is located outside the south entrance of A Building.
·         Abbotsford: external bookdrop is located outside the north entrance of G Building.
·         Mission: internal bookdrop is located in the hallway outside the library. Bookdrop only accessible when the building is open.

Q. How do I know when my items are due?

  • Check the date due receipt you received when you checked out the items
  • Login to "My Library Account"
  • The format for due dates is day/month/year.  For example, Due: 13/7/2007

Q. How can I avoid paying fines?

  • Regularly check your UFV email for messages regarding possible due date changes or reminders.
  • Know how long you can keep any item out
  • Return items on time
  • Renew items BEFORE they are overdue
  • The library will send a reminder to your My UFV e-mail. For more information, click here.

Q. How can I renew my items?

  • All library materials that can be borrowed (with the exception of course reserves and Interlibrary loans) can be self-renewed 2 times by undergraduate students, 3 times by graduate students, and 2 times by faculty and staff. To renew, go to "My Library Account" on the UFV Library's homepage.
  • You need to know your library card number and PIN number to renew your items. Don't know your PIN number? Call the library and we can tell you by phone or request your PIN here.

Q. How can I tell if my renewal worked?

Always read the renewal screen carefully and note your new due dates. If an item cannot be renewed, the due date will not have changed and you will see a message on the screen.

Q. When I tried renewing an item, I got a message "Item may not be renewed"? Why not?

If an item has been placed on hold by another patron, you will not be able to renew it. Overdue fines will begin unless you return this item on or before it's due date.

If you have self-renewed an item the maximum times, you need to bring the item back into the library and renew in person.

Q. When I tried to renew my items, I got the message "Sorry, you are not eligible to renew any of your materials". What does this mean?

Once your outstanding bills and accruing fines reach a threshold, the system blocks your library privileges to sign out and renew items. You will remain blocked until you have paid your fines.

Q. How do I know what my fines are?

You can view your own bills and accruing overdue fines.

  1. Go to http://www.ufv.ca/library
  2. Click on My Library Account
  3. Click on Review My Account
  4. Enter your UFV ID# and Library PIN number.
  5. Your checkouts, overdue fines and bills will be displayed.

Q. Where and how can I pay my fines?

You may pay your fines in person at the circulation desk in the Abbotsford or Chilliwack campus libraries. (The Mission campus office can also accept fines for Mission users.) The Abbotsford and Chilliwack libraries accept cash, debit, cheque, VISA or Mastercard. You may also pay by mailing a cheque, or over the phone by credit card.

Q. Can I dispute my fines?

You may complete and submit a Library Dispute Resolution Form to the Library Technician in Charge. The form is available at the circulation desks.

Fines will not be forgiven for reasons such as failure to receive an overdue notice, lack of knowledge of loan periods, forgetting due dates, or failure to renew materials on time.

Q. I have lost my book. What do I have to pay?

Click here for list of "Charges for Lost or Damaged Items"

Q. Why do you charge overdue fines?

Library fines are not an attempt to generate revenue. Fines have been implemented to help students have access to our limited library resources, in that materials will be used within a reasonable length of time and then returned for others to use.
