How do I access RefWorks?
Log in using the link on the library's home page: http://www.ufv.ca/library. If you are logging in for the first time, you will need to sign up for an account and will receive an email message confirming your registration.
You can also access RefWorks from home. Use the link on the library's home page, and enter yourre ID number (student or employee) and password when prompted.
On rare occasions, you may experience a problem connecting via the library's link. If this happens, try going directly to http://refworks.scholarsportal.info/ - you will need to enter the Group Code from the email confirmation you received when you signed up for an account.
I keep getting error messages when I try to log in. Help!
Make sure your browser or internet security/firewall software is not blocking the RefWorks site. Some browsers have a setting where you can make RefWorks a trusted site. Make sure you are logging into the correct place:
- The login screen should say "RefWorks User Login for University of the Fraser Valley," and you should see a place to enter your RefWorks login name and password.
- If you are directed to a login page that says “RefWorks User Login…,” and it's not for UFV, click on the on the link that says "Not your organization? Login using your Group Code." This will bring you to the RefWorks public login center. The Group Code was provided to you in the email confirmation you received after signing up for an account.
- If you are off-campus or logging in to a different RefWorks subscribing group, you should see three folder tabs in the RefWorks public login centre:
- the first tab is for remote access via the UFV group code. Enter the group code, then click the "Go To Login" button to get to the UFV login screen.
- the second tab (Individual Log-In) is for RefWorks users not affiliated with a university; these subscribers pay a fee directly to RefWorks.
- the third tab (Trial Log-In) is for 30-day trial account users.
I've forgotten my login name and password. How can I get them?
On the RefWorks login page, there is a link that reads "Forgot your log-in?" Select this link and enter the email address you used when signing up for your RefWorks account. Your login name and password will be mailed to you. If you do not receive an email with your account information, contact us for assistance.
How do I change my user name and password?
After you log in to RefWorks, go to Tools→Update User Information. You can change your login name, password, email address or establish a read-only password in this area.
How do I open two accounts in RefWorks at the same time?
Open your browser by selecting it from the Program menu or by clicking on the icon on your desktop or task bar. Or open one account in one browser (e.g., Firefox) and the second in another (e.g., Internet Explorer or Safari).
If you use Internet Explorer, do not open another window by selecting the File→New→Window option. When you do this you will not be able to log in to a second RefWorks account; it will be the same account, regardless of the password or login information.

The online help and tutorial are very useful. There is also a Quick Start Card you can download (you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this. Download this for free at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html).
All of these are also available when working within RefWorks.
Where are my references stored?
Your personal contact information, as well as all the data you add to your RefWorks database, is stored on the RefWorks server. Beginning in March 2007, the server for UFV RefWorks users will be located at the University of Toronto. You can access your RefWorks data from anywhere by using your personal username and password. You can also make your own backup copy of your database (in a zipped file not suitable for viewing) from the RefWorks Tools→Backup/Restore function). This backup can only be used with the Restore feature in RefWorks.
Can I access RefWorks from off-campus?
Yes, in the same way that you can access our research databases from off-campus. You will be asked to enter your ID number (student or employee), as well as your network password. See Off-Campus Access Instructions for more information.
Do I need a group code for RefWorks?
No, you should not need a group code for RefWorks. Use the link provided by the library to access your RefWorks account.
If you are using Write-N-Cite from off-campus and are prompted for a group code, follow these instructions for configuring remote access to Write-N-Cite. If, after configuring Write-N-Cite for remote access, you are still prompted for a Group Code, please contact a UFV librarian.
I'm using Mozilla FireFox and having problems accessing RefWorks. Is there a solution?
Yes. In FireFox, look for a blue exclamation point icon in the lower left-hand corner of your screen; it's just to the right of the lock icon. Click the exclamation point icon and in the "Blocked Popups" window that appears, click "Unblock Site." Next, select your browser refresh button and you should see the RefWorks login screen. Unblocking the RefWorks pop-up should only need to be done once per FireFox install or user profile.
