Video Bookings

It is recommended that faculty and students pre-book videos and DVD's for their specific show date. Videos and DVD's may be booked up to 4 months in advance.  Please use the online booking form below.

Video Interlibrary Loans

We will borrow videos or DVD's from other B.C. post-secondary libraries on your behalf. If you intend to show the video in a classroom setting, we will borrow a copy which has public performance rights.
Public Performance Rights

Showing videos and DVD's in a classroom setting is considered a public performance. The UFV library has purchased the vast majority of videos with public performance rights to enable classroom showings.  These rights extend to UFV faculty, staff and students.  Due to the licensing conditions, community borrowers may view titles within the library, but may not borrow them.

For items without PPR, the video will be marked as "Home Use Only" both on the case and in the catalogue record.

Feature Film License

UFV has an annual license with two major feature film distributors.  This license allows for the public performance of many feature films, with some specific restrictions:
  • The showing must be in an educational setting and for an educational purpose
  • No admission may be charged
  • No external advertising may be undertaken

The public showing of films which do not have public performance rights or which violate the conditions above may lead to prosecution and fines.

New this year is Entertainment Use Rights for films covered in the Audio-Cine Film License!   Educational use allows the showing of films for instructional purposes in educational settings only.  The Entertainment Use license allows broader use rights outside the classroom context.   So here is what you can now do with films from Audio-Cine Films:

  • The films can be shown anywhere on campus.
  • The films can be shown by someone other than an instructor, e.g. a student club, a staff traininge vent.
  • The audience can include students and staff, with some members of the public present (please see limitation below).
Please note the following limitations on Entertainment Use:

  • The event must be free to attend with no cost or cover charge.  Showing films at charity fundraisers is allowed, but only if the cost is purely by donation.
  • The films can be shown by someone other than an instructor, e.g. a student club, a staff traininge vent.
  • The license covers only films that have been released for rental and home purchase; films still in theatrical release are not covered.
  • The primary audience of the event must be members of the institution. Event advertising must be limited to media targeted at the university/college and its students and staff. In the case of print advertising, the advertisements may only appear in campus media (e.g. a student newspaper) and not in general community newspapers.

The websites of Audio-Cine Films and Criterion Pictures provide a list of studios and titles covered under the licenses.  You may also contact Heather for assistance.

For more information, see the Feature Film Public Performance Rights FAQ's.

Purchasing Videos and DVD's  (Faculty)

Faculty may order videos from their regular departmental allocations.  It is recommended that faculty preview videos if possible.  Many producers offer clips or trials of videos via their websites.  You may also contact Heather to arrange a preview.

A few video distributors are listed below.  For more collection development assistance, contact Patti.
Film Festivals

The UFV feature film site licenses do not cover film festivals to which the general public are invited through off campus publicity and advertising.  Groups wishing to organize a public film festival must take a number of steps.

  • Contact the distributor of the film/s.  You may check the websites of Audio-Cine Films, and Criterion Pictures. These companies represent many major film producers and studios, such as Lions Gate Films, Sony Pictures, and 20th Century Fox.
  • Provide them with a detailed explanation of the festival, including location, date, expected audience and attendance, whether admission will be charged, and which films you wish to show.
  • A case by case assessment will be made regarding royalties to be paid. These may range from $125 per film and more.
  • Keep written documentation of any agreements made.

Streaming Video Collections at UFV
