Borrowing Materials:  Students

Library Cards

Students enrolled in full and part-time studies are entitled to a campus card, which acts as a combination student card, library card, computer printing and photocopier card. Continuing Education students are issued a free (paper) library card for the duration of their course.  Click here for information on how to get a campus card.

You will also be issued a library PIN number, used to place holds and review your library account.

  • Cards are issued outside the library during the first weeks of fall term, otherwise are issued in the library
  • Bring photo ID
  • Privileges will expire at the end of semester
  • You must show your card in order to borrow items
  • You are responsible for all items signed out on your card
  • Cards are not transferrable
  • Notify the library immediately in the event of a card being lost or stolen
  • Replacement card cost is $10

My Library Account

Use My Library Account to view your checkouts, due dates, fines, status of hold requests and renew your items. To log into My Library Account, use your student number and library PIN number.  If you don't remember your library PIN number, please contact us.

Renewals

Items are self-renewed online.  To renew items, connect to My Library Account.

Always read the renewal screen carefully and note the new due dates.  The format for due dates is day/month/year (Due: 13/7/2008).

If renewal limits have been reached (3 times), or the item is on hold for another patron, you will see a message "Item may not be renewed."  In the case of renewal limits being reached, you may return the item to the library and renew in person at the circulation desk.

Course Reserves and Interlibrary Loans may not be renewed.

Returning Items

Items may be returned in the book return slot at the circulation desk (during opening hours), or in the external bookdrop located outside the entrance of the building (after hours.)  Note: the Mission bookdrop is located in the hallway outside the library. You may return items to any UFV campus library.

Holds and Transfers

If an item is signed out, "just received", or on another campus, you may place a hold on it.
Intercampus transfers are delivered the next weekday, with Friday requests arriving on Monday. Items will be held at the desk for 7 days.  Pickup notices are sent by e-mail.

For more details on placing holds, notification, and cancellation of holds, see Procedures for Holds.

Overdue Items

Students are notified of overdue items through a series of e-mails, beginning with 1 day prior to the due date.  All e-mail notices are sent to a student's UFV e-mail account, which can be accessed from the myUFV portal.  These notices are a courtesy reminder only. Students are reponsible for knowing the due dates of their library material.

If an item is not returned, the borrower will be invoiced for the replacement cost, plus any accrued overdue fines.

Recalls

When an overdue item has a hold placed on it, the library will contact the borrower and recall the item.  The item must be returned within 48 hours, after which a recall fine of $1.00 per day will accrue.

Lost and Damaged Items

The borrower will be invoiced for the replacement cost of any lost or damaged items which need to be withdrawn from the collection, plus any accrued overdue fines.

Paying Fines

You may pay your fines in person at the circulation desk of any UFV campus library. (When the Mission campus library is closed, make your payment in Abbotsford or Chilliwack.) The library accepts cash, cheque, VISA or Mastercard. The Abbotsford and Chilliwack libraries accept debit cards.

You may also pay by mailing a cheque, or over the phone by credit card.

For disputed fines, you may complete and submit a Library Dispute Resolution Form to the Library Technician in Charge. The form is available at the circulation desk.

Fines will not be forgiven for reasons such as failure to receive an overdue notice, lack of knowledge of loan periods, forgetting due dates, or failure to renew materials on time.

Suspension of Privileges

Library borrowing and renewing privileges are blocked on accounts owing over $15.00.  Blocked patrons are notified monthly by e-mail. As well, you may check your account balance in My Library Account.

Non-payment of bills may also result in withholding of grades and transcripts, or use of collection agency.

Borrowing From Other Libraries

UFV students may come to the library to pick up a COPPUL card, which provides borrowing privileges for most post-secondary libraries in Canada.

We will also obtain books, journal articles, videos/DVDs, and more from other libraries via interlibrary loan (ILL).
