The purpose of this policy is to ensure a mutual respect for all members of the University community and to maintain and promote a safe environment for all users of the library.
Student Conduct
Conduct in the UFV library must comply with the UFV Policy BRP-230.03, Student Conduct.
UFV students are expected to conduct themselves in a mature and responsible manner, and will be held responsible for their actions, whether acting alone or in a group.
Personal misconduct includes, but is not limited to the following:
a. acting in a way that disrupts exam writing, studying, research, and/or the teaching/learning process
b. endangering the health or safety of other students, University employees, or other persons present on campus
c. violating Policy 14 Appropriate Use of Computing and Network Resources
d. stealing or destroying the work of another student
e. removing, mutilating, or wilfully misplacing books, equipment, or other materials
Procedures and Penalties for Personal Misconduct by Students
Penalties imposed by the University for personal misconduct may include one or more of the following: a verbal or written reprimand, exclusion from specified areas of the University, restitution or other ameliorative measures, suspension from the University.
a. For incidents of disruptive behavior, students may be required to leave the area. If the misconduct is sufficiently serious, the incident will be reported to the Director of Student Services.
b. The Director will confer with the student in question and the University Librarian and decide on an appropriate penalty. A copy of the disciplinary action taken will be placed in the Student Conduct Registry, with a copy to the student. The report will be removed two years after the incident.
c. If the misconduct is sufficiently serious, the Director of Student Services may recommend to the President that the student be suspended from UFV. If suspension is recommended, the student will be so advised and provided with a written reason(s) for the decision.
d. Students who remove or wilfully damage library materials or equipment may incur penalties including financial restitution, suspension of library privileges, or suspension from UFV.
Community User Conduct
Community Users are expected to refrain from all types of misconduct, as outlined in the Student Conduct policy above and will be held to the same standards of conduct that apply to students.
Procedures and Penalties for Personal Misconduct by Community Users
a. All incidents of misconduct will be reported to the University Librarian, and Manager of Safety and Security.
b. Penalties imposed by the University for personal misconduct may include one or more of the following: a verbal or written reprimand, exclusion from specified areas of the University, restitution or other ameliorative measures, being barred from the University campuses.
c. Conduct of sufficiently serious nature may be reported to the local Police authority having jurisdiction if deemed appropriate by library staff and/or Campus Security Services.
