Off-campus Access to Research Databases
(Proxy Server Information)

Basic Steps  | ID Numbers | Passwords | Page won't display

Please read the following information carefully.

UFV faculty, staff and students registered in the current semester may access the library's electronic resources from off campus.  This includes article indexes, e-books and databases.

Our licensing agreements with the database providers require that users authenticate themselves using a user ID and password.   For details on terms and conditions, see the Terms of Use for Electronic Resources .

Some resources are unrestricted, such as the UFV Library catalogue and free indexes such as Ageline.

Basic Steps

  1. Connect to either the a-z or subject  listing of databases.
  2. Click on the name of the database. You will be taken to a "Master Page" with detailed information on this database.  Click on the name of the database again.
  3. If you are off campus, you will be taken to the Proxy Login page.
  4. Enter your student ID number or faculty/employee ID number.
  5. Enter your password.  (For more information on passwords, see below.)
  6. Click on Submit.
  7. If your information is valid, you will be connected directly to the database of your choice.

More information on ID numbers

  1. Students:  Your ID number is printed on your registration receipt and on your student/library card.
  2. Faculty/Staff:  Your ID is printed on your paycheque, on your library card and on your contract of employment.

More information on Passwords

  1. Your password is the same password used for logging into myUFV to register, etc. Your password should be 6 digits long.
  2. NEW USERS: You must log into myUFV once and update your default password before using the proxy login page . The default password (birthdate in the form of YYMMDD) is considered "expired" and needs to be reset in myUFV.
  3. Passwords also expire every 3 years.  If you are having any problems logging into databases, go to myUFV and try to login. You will be prompted to change your password if it has expired.
  4. If you have created a password, but have forgotten what it is, go to the User Name and Password Issues  page to reset your password.
  5. The library's proxy file is updated several times throughout the work day. However, there may be a time delay of up to one hour in your password change taking effect. Changes made in the evening will not take effect until the next morning.
  6. If you are unable to reset your password, you may complete a Password Request Change Form
  7. Please note that the library is unable to reset or verify passwords.

If the login does not display

  1. If you have "clicked here", but get "page cannot be found" error message instead of the login page...
  2. If you have "clicked here", but the login page times out...

...the proxy server may be offline. If the login page does not display contact a librarian or the ITS HelpDesk directly (604-864-4610 ; HelpDesk.ITS@ufv.ca ) with the information that the "Library proxy server is currently not available".

Please Note:  MAC users should not use the Safari Browser when connecting from off campus.  Instead, use the Mozilla Firefox browser.  Safari is not working with our proxy system.
