Japanese Study Tour 2013 
Modern Languages 

 

On this study tour, we will stay in Tokyo and have lectures at a UFV’s partner institution, Chuo University, and make a five-days trip to Hiroshima and Kyoto. During the trip, we will visit Peace Memorial park, Miyajima, Mazda museum and factory, Kinkakuji-temple, Kyoto Imperial Palace and others. In-Tokyo cultural activities include visit to Meiji-Jingu-shrine, Tea Ceremony experience, and Taiko drumming. Also the students can stay in homestay in Japanese families and have exchange with Japanese students. Five days in Tokyo are reserved as free days.

Course Information

JAPN 103 Japanese Study Tour: Language and Culture
3 credit, Prerequisite: None

This course offers students an introduction to Japanese language and culture by means of a study tour. It is a one-semester course which includes a 2 to 3 week study tour experience. The tour visits some major Japanese cities: Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. The field experience will be preceded by lectures and tests. Discussions and lectures will continue during the study tour. Periodic field journal notes are required and a term paper will be due on the last day of the course.

Course Dates: Early Summer (May-June) Semester 2013

The course will begin as a regular course in May, then will continue and end during the stay in Japan.

JAPN 103 fulfills the prerequisite of JAPN 102

Non-Credit Participants

Required Participation: Study tour orientation session prior to the departure at UFV, Orientation at the partner institution in Japan (Chuo University), Study tour events in Japan

Optional participation: Classes at UFV, Classes at Chuo University

June 1  (Sat)  Orientation at Chuo University 
June 3-7  (Mon - Fri)  Classes at Chuo University: 2 90-minute sessions per day 
June 10-14     (Mon - Fri)  Field trip to Hiroshima and Kyoto 
June 10  (Mon)  Tokyo to Hiroshima by airplane (stay in Hiroshima)
June 11  (Tues)  Tour in Hiroshima: Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima (stay in Hiroshima) 
June 12  (Wed)  Mazda Museum, Hiroshima to Kyoto by shinkansen (stay in Kyoto) 
June 13  (Thurs)  Tour bus in Kyoto: Nijo-castle, Kinkakuji-temple, and others  (stay in Kyoto)
June 14  (Fri)  Kyoto to Tokyo by shinkansen 
June 17-19  (Mon - Wed)    Classes at Chuo University and field trips in Tokyo 
June 20  (Thurs)  Leave Tokyo and arrive at Vancouver 


Participants will have five free days in Tokyo and a free time before shinkansen departure in Kyoto on June 14.

Tour Costs

Credit student staying at homestay or dormitory in Tokyo:  $3,836.57 
Credit student staying at hotel in Tokyo: $4,586.37 
Non-credit student staying at homestay or dormitory in Tokyo:  $3,700.00 
Non-credit student staying at hotel in Tokyo:  $4,450.00 



Price includes:

Tuition for credit student/ Educational Fee for non-credit student

Return Airfare and airport shuttle in Tokyo

Accommodation in Tokyo (homestay, dormitory, or hotel in Tama-Center area)

Transportation and accommodation on Hiroshima/ Kyoto Trip

Entrance Fees for museum and shrine/ Tour bus in Kyoto

Price does not include:

Meals (except homestay), Local transportation in Tokyo, Travel insurance  

Payment Deadlines:

February 15: $500 non-refundable deposit and signed Release of Liability and Waiver and Emergency Information form

There are 15 seats available and participants will be signed up on a first-come, first-serve basis. Also a person who signed up early has the priority in choosing the type of accommodation in Tokyo.

Please Note

Participants must me at least 19 years of age.

10-15 students will be present on the Study Tour.

The language content of JAPN 103 is the same as JAPN 101 Japanese Language I
