UFV and NASA collaborate on research project

Working with NASA is a dream for most scientists. And it’s something a group of University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) students were able to experience during a recent research trip to south central B.C.

The group spent two days at Kelly Lake, near Clinton, in late July, collecting data to learn more about the lake’s history. The lake is of interest to NASA as it contains unique rock formations called microbialites, which are considered to be rare carbonate rock structures formed by microorganisms.

Arts Research Lunch

At the September Arts Faculty Council meeting, the Research Office volunteered to organize and sponsor an event for faculty to talk to students about their research and describe student opportunities for participation in research.   This event would enhance the exposure of research to students and encourage their participation in research while attending UFV.

The Research Office is hosted a lunch for students and research active faculty in the Faculty of Arts on Thursday, November 24.Faculty members spoke for 2 minutes to the students and described their research and what students could learn from participating in it.  Students that attended found the event very useful and made connections with faculty. Faculty members also made new connections among themselves.

Watch for the announcement in January for the Science faculty research lunch!

Research:  Connecting Across Disciplines

A reception was held on October 19 at the Ramada Inn and Conference Centre, hosted by the AVP Research and Graduate Studies.

The purpose of the evening was to connect UFV faculty researchers and stimulate interdisciplinary networking and creative thinking, and ultimately encourage research partnerships as well as provide increased opportunities for students to be involved in research.

Each attendee provided a PowerPoint slide that captured something about their research area.  The purpose of the slide was to generate discussions and connections.

The event was a great success and similar gatherings will be held in the future.
