2013/14 Teaching faculty research option and scholarly activity option — application information

The Office of Research Services and Industry Liaison and the Scholarly Activity Release Sub-Committee
of the JPDC announce a new application process for research option and scholarly activity option requests.
If you are a teaching faculty member planning on submitting an application for release for the 2013/14
academic year, please note these important changes:

1. You will now use one form to apply for either release.

2. Your application form will be submitted to Human Resources for distribution to the appropriate subcommittee.

3. The Teaching Research Option subcommittee and the Scholarly Release Option subcommittee will continue
to function as separate committees.

4. As in the past, the 80 releases in total available to both committees will continue to be used to support
approved research and scholarly activities.

Teaching faculty research option and scholarly activity option application information and forms are available at http://www.ufv.ca/es/professional_development/research_scholarly/research_scholarly_application.htm  or http://www.ufv.ca/Research/Forms.htm

Deadline for application submission is Wed, Oct 31, 2012.

Aid to Small Universities Grant

In 2011, UFV was successful in its application to SSHRC for an Aid to Small Universities (ASU) grant. Though
this is an external grant, the Research Office administers the grant to faculty through a proposal system.

The call for proposals is for applications requesting funding for research in one (or more) of the following
three areas:

1. Citizenship, Culture, Governance and Human Rights;
2. Environment and Sustainable Development ; and
3. Two areas of teaching and learning: the pedagogical approach of research-like learning
activities / inquiry-based learning and how students learn.

At least 50% of the budget should be dedicated to hiring student research assistants. The grant will cover
costs of travel by faculty or student research assistants that is required for the conduction of the research.

For more information regarding the call for proposals, please contact Brad Whittaker (Brad.Whittaker@ufv.ca).

To apply, complete the ASU application form () and submit it to Yvette Fairweather in the UFV Research Office (Yvette.Fariweather@ufv.ca).

Research assistants / Work Study Grant Program

The Work Study Grant Program has been under revision with four goals in mind: Simplicity - Transparency - Fairness - Accountability, and is now complete.

The Research Office will no longer be putting out the calls for research assistants. The call will come
from the Career Centre in April 2012.

Research option

Conducting research is part of the duties of all faculty members. To facilitate their ongoing involvement in major
research activities and projects, full-time faculty members are encouraged to apply for a one-course release
per year from their teaching workload. Funding varies each year, and in 2010-2011 over 40 research option releases
are being funded.  Please visit the Forms page to download the RO request form.

Application Deadline for 2012-2013: October 31, 2012
Sabbatical leave and scholarly activity

Eligible faculty may apply for a paid or unpaid research leave/sabbatical, or scholarly activity release through the Employee Services office. Leaves and sabbaticals are assessed based on specific criteria outlined in the application packages.

Visit Employee Services for more information.
