I grew up in and around Montréal, Québec. From a young age, I was interested in popular culture, especially movies and popular music. I found out that I could study these and related topics in communication studies at Concordia University in Montréal, so I went there as an undergraduate. I obtained my B.A. at this institution in 1985, with a major in communication studies and a minor in French. After Concordia, I attended the Université du Québec à Montréal, where I completed my M.A. in communication in 1988. Around that time I moved out to Burnaby, B.C. so I could attend Simon Fraser University. I completed my Ph.D. in communication there in 1992.
I started teaching at UCFV in 1994. I have also taught at Kwantlen University College and Simon Fraser University. I have done other types of work as well over the years, including much translating and copy-editing.

In this photo from the early 70's, I'm the one standing in the blue shirt. Either I was at someone's birthday party or I was lecturing on product placement.
