BRUCE KIRKLEY

PhD (Toronto), MA (Toronto), BA Honours (UBC). 

 

A full-time faculty member with UFV Theatre since 1994, Bruce teaches Acting, Voice, Theatre History and Shakespeare in Performance. He is actively engaged in theatre research, and is currently writing a book on the relationship between theatre and television in Canada. His research interests include: modern Canadian theatre; cross-media influences in contemporary theatre, film, and television; and the actor’s creative process. His articles have been published in Modern Drama, Canadian Theatre Review, Theatre Research in Canada, Theatre and Television and The Encyclopedia of Literature in Canada. Bruce also serves as Treasurer of the Association for Canadian Theatre Research and Book Review Editor for the journal Theatre Research in Canada.

The Tempest (2010); Schoolhouse (2009); Les Belles Soeurs (2008); The Glass Menagerie (2007); The Taming of the Shrew (2006); She Stoops to Conquer (2005); Bottom’s Dreame (based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream, adapted by Bruce Kirkley, 2005); Much Ado About Nothing (2005); Sonnetscape (2003); King Lear (2003); Alice Through the Looking Glass (2001); Much Ado About Nothing (abridged version, adapted by Bruce Kirkley, 2001); Romeo and Juliet (2001); The Comedy of Errors (2000); Pentecost (1998); As You Like It (1998); The Fifteen Minute Hamlet (1997); The Winter’s Tale (abridged version, adapted by Bruce Kirkley, 1997); Under Milkwood (1996); The Tempest (1996); and The Stone Angel (1995).

 

 

Bruce’s other directing credits include: Ben Jonson’s The Alchemist, Samuel Beckett’s Catastrophe, James Reaney’s St. Nicholas Street Hotel, Nigel Hunt’s Serving the Sentence, and Max Frisch’s The Fire Raisers. Bruce has also directed for television, and his film production of Samuel Beckett’s teleplay ...but the clouds… was broadcast on the CBC’s Adrienne Clarkson Presents (1991).
