Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW)
The Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) is offered to a group of five or six colleagues and is designed to enhance the teaching effectiveness of both new and experienced educators. During the 3 ½ day workshop, participants design and conduct three "mini-lessons" and receive verbal, written and video feedback from the other participants who have been learners in the mini-lessons.
Using an intensive experiential learning approach, participants are provided with information on the theory and practice of teaching adult learners, the selection and writing of useful learning objectives with accompanying lesson plans, techniques for eliciting learner participation, and suggestions for evaluation of learning.
The workshop encourages reflection and examination of one's teaching practices with feedback focused on the learning process rather than on the specific content of the lesson.
The ISW is offered free to faculty and staff at UFV. These workshops are facilitated by your colleagues. This offering of the ISW will be facilitated by Colleen Bell, Library; Wendy Burton, Teaching and Learning; Randy Kelley, Trades; Marilyn MacDonald, UUP; Samantha Pattridge, CMNS; and one more to be confirmed.

Facilitator Development Workshop (FDW)
Using ISW activities, participants develop strategies for facilitating the group process central to the ISW method. Like the ISW, the FDW is a peer-based model providing participants a small group setting in which to work on facilitation skills. Plenary sessions on themes such as learning styles, collaborative learning, and feedback models begin each day and bring all of the small groups together. FDW participants have usually already completed the ISW. For more information, visit the ISW Website.
If you are interested in attending an FDW, and you have participated in an ISW, please contact Wendy Burton, wendy.burton@ufv.ca.
