A portfolio is a compilation of work created in various mediums that reflect your talent, creative process, knowledge, interests, skills, and artistic development. An entry portfolio for UFV Visual Arts program includes both visual and written requirements.

Your submission must include the following:

  • Portfolio: 10 to 12 pieces of creative work
  • Three reflections
  • Résumé

Admissions are competitive. Early submissions have priority in the review process.

International applicants

International applicants should follow the portfolio guidelines and use them to submit a portfolio by mail. All elements except the workbook/journal may be submitted electronically. For deadline details, please contact UFV International.

Submission deadlines

Create a portfolio with 10 to 12 pieces of your best creative work. Showcase the use of at least three different mediums.

  • Include a variety of subject matter, diversity in techniques, and highlight your conceptual development.
  • Submissions may include traditional and/or digital media.
    • Examples of media include animation, video, audio recordings, photography, collage, sculpture, fibre-based works, designs for websites, performance art, painting, drawing, print media, experimental work, or mixed media. BFA applicants with interests outside of Visual Arts may submit work in any media of choice: essays, critical responses, screenplays or scripts, garments or costumes, reviews of a personal dramatic performance or digital recordings of a performance.

Submittion instructions:

  • Submit your portfolio using SlideRoom
  • Examples of acceptable formats for visual pieces include:
    • PDF, JPEG, or TIFF formats
    • URL link to a specific work (video)
    • URL and/or PDF document(s) with multiple pages depicting process. Include sketches from your sketchbook, exploration and ideas for a finished piece (considered one of the 10 to 12 pieces)

Submit your portfolio

Write three reflections, each with the following criteria:

  • One Canadian artist
  • One international artist
    • Choose one Canadian and one international artist
    • In 150 words each, explain why you selected them and reflect critically on their work
  • Personal program goals
    • In 150 words, discuss your goals in the program, including intended fields of study

Begin with your contact information and provide a list of your education, work experience, volunteer activity, travel, languages, exhibitions, skills, and other interests. No references are required.

Submit as a PDF in SlideRoom where indicated.

Portfolios are assessed by Fine Arts faculty on a 1 to 5 scale (5 excellent) for each of the criterion listed below:

  • Creativity: imaginative and original ideas
  • Experimentation and exploration: personal projects as well as school projects, shows process for one piece, explores composition
  • Minimum of three mediums: examples include animation, video, audio recordings, photography, collage, sculpture, fibre-based works, designs for websites, performance art, painting, drawing, print media, experimental work or mixed media
  • Range of subject matter: conceptual and representational
  • Written reflection: demonstrate some knowledge of artistic practice, your writing ability, and interests
  • Résumé: clarity and attention to detail
  • Following instructions: quality and completeness of the submission

The BFA at UFV prepared me for graduate studies in ways I could not have imagined. The diverse range of resources, opportunities, as well as faculty and support staff who were there to push me to realize my potential, have helped develop me into the artist that I’ve become today.
