October 17-18, 2015 - The Feeding 9 Billion Challenge is an exciting event taking place in universities across Canada. It challenges undergraduate students to work in teams to develop innovative projects fostering a more sustainable food system. The Agriculture Centre of Excellence sponsored a team of students from UFV. Each team had 24 hours to propose how to make food systems on campus more sustainable and then present their ideas to a panel of judges. The winning teams competed in the national competition in Ontario in December and the winners of that competition presented their ideas in Switzerland in February 2016.
The first proposal provided a plan to integrate sustainable food systems into every aspect of the university including education, agricultural production, and nutrient management. The second winning team proposed a new system of food procurement for campus food services that would source as much local food as possible.
