March 3 - May 5, 2018 - This series of workshops provided new or aspiring farmers with information essential to growing a successful garden. These introductory-level workshops were for people that would like to have an income from farming but need to improve their horticultural knowledge. The focus was on growing organically on a small scale. These workshops were sponsored by Vancity Credit Union, the City of Surrey, the John Volken Academy, and the University of the Fraser Valley.
October 25, 2017 - ACE co-sponsored the Future of Food Forum with Aga Khan University to discuss the sustainability of global food systems and food security. Panelists included Dr. Alex Awiti of Aga Khan University, Dr. Lenore Newman (UFV Canada Research Chair), Professor Cherie Enns and Dr. Garry Fehr.
September 24, 2017 – This second panel of an ongoing discussion featured Dr. Laila Benkrima, Carmen Dunn, Dan Oostenbrink and Dr. Garry Fehr. Panelists discussed the effects of pesticides of plant and human health.
May 15, 2017 - This panel discussion featured Dr. Mariano Mapili, UFV Department of Geography. Panelists discussed sustainable farming and addressed issues of organic farming, soil health, GMOs and human health.
March 18-19, 2017 - 29 UFV students from 11 disciplines competed in this event. Multi-disciplinary teams of students were tasked with producing business proposals to reduce food waste within the Fraser Valley in only 24 hours.
March 17, 2017 - Members of the Stó:lō Community Futures (SCF) team were invited to tour the Agriculture Centre of Excellence facility in Chilliwack. The SCF are interested in agricultural opportunities for indigenous communities in S’ólh Téméxw.
February 21, 2017 - Dr. Michael Dossett, BC Blueberry Council Research Scientist at Agriculture and Agrifood Canada, presented his plant breeding research to students, faculty, scientists, farmers and interested community members. Around the globe, plant breeders are in a race to stay ahead of rapidly evolving pest populations and a changing climate to develop new varieties in support of agricultural development, and to feed a growing population.

November 13, 2016 - ACE Director Garry Fehr travelled to Beijing, China to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the China Council for the Promotion of National Trade on behalf of the Agriculture Centre of Excellence and UFV at the 2016 National Investment and Trade Fair for Ethnic Regions. The MOU enables the partners to explore the supply of contract services that will encourage the development of the ethnic and autonomous regions of China. Currently, the focus is on supplying expertise for agroforestry, greenhouse production and innovative technologies. September 29, 2016 - A unique partnership between UFV, the City of Surrey, and the John Volken Academy has won a Leadership and Innovation in Agriculture award, presented by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM), the BC Agriculture Council (BCAC), and the Ministry of Agriculture. The award recognizes the BioPod Initiative, which aims to stimulate agri-tech development, provide opportunities for careers in agriculture, and strengthen the local food system. December 7, 2015 - The UFV Centre for Global Development hosted a symposium on climate change to discuss the science, effects and the potential for human adaptation. ACE Director, Dr. Garry Fehr, joined panelists, Dr. Lionel Pandolfo, Adjunct Professor and Instructor, Department of Geography and the Environment, Mr. Patrick Harrison, Instructor, Biology Department and Dr. Edward Akuffo, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science.
October 27, 2015 - Otter Co-op presented UFV with a cash $75,000 donation towards capital costs of outfitting the new barn facility at the Agriculture Centre of Excellence and supplies to support the livestock programs. Read more on the UFV Today blog.
October 17-18, 2015 - The Feeding 9 Billion Challenge is an exciting event taking place in universities across Canada. It challenges undergraduate students to work in teams to develop innovative projects fostering a more sustainable food system. The Agriculture Centre of Excellence sponsored a team of students from UFV. Each team had 24 hours to propose how to make food systems on campus more sustainable and then present their ideas to a panel of judges. The winning teams competed in the national competition in Ontario in December and the winners of that competition presented their ideas in Switzerland in February 2016.
The first proposal provided a plan to integrate sustainable food systems into every aspect of the university including education, agricultural production, and nutrient management. The second winning team proposed a new system of food procurement for campus food services that would source as much local food as possible.
October 13, 2015 - UFV students Sierra Nickel, Josh Rempel, Marie Verbenkov, and Jeremy Wagner were Queen Elizabeth Scholars Program recipients and completed a 3 month internship in Dar es Salaam investigating food security systems. May 7, 2015 - UFV held a series of workshops and a forum to discuss the processes to creating sustainable food systems, with speakers from Kenya, India and Canada. Forum panelists included Dr. Alex Awiti (Aga Khan University, Kenya), Dr. Dhian Kaur (Panjab University, India), James Kuhns (Ryerson University, Canada), Imbenzi George, (Honorary Consul General, Kenya) and Orlando Schmidt (BC Ministry of Agriculture, Canada).
