Biography

Dr. Garry Fehr is the Director of the Agriculture Centre of Excellence (ACE) at the University of the Fraser Valley and a faculty member of the Geography and the Environment department. As the Director of ACE, Dr. Fehr facilitates collaboration between industry, government, and universities. These partnerships test, demonstrate, and commercialize technological innovation that strengthen the agriculture sector and bolster regional food security.

Dr. Fehr completed his BA at Thompson Rivers University and his PhD in Geography and International Development Studies at the University of Guelph. Prior to attending university, Dr. Fehr spent 20 years working in the construction and natural resource sectors, including owning his own business providing water and vacuum services for residential and industrial purposes. This experience, combined with his leadership of development projects around the world, has informed his current research on rural development in collaboration with farmers in India, Kenya, and British Columbia.

Dr. Fehr’s past work includes investigating how globalization and decentralized governance impact rural livelihoods and the landscapes they depend upon. He has been engaged in Participatory Action Research in partnership with Panjab University and local NGOs to empower children and youth in community development near Chandigarh, India. Dr. Fehr has successfully published a number of book chapters, reports and peer-reviewed papers, notably, State Power and Protected Areas in the journal Political Geography, and Globalisation and the Poor: Sustaining Rural Livelihoods in India, for the Shastri Applied Research Project.

Dr. Fehr’s passion for global development combined with his business experience, means he is often sought after as an expert in the areas of sustainable agriculture innovation, rural livelihoods, and social justice.
