Competition Rules

1. Contest Period

Entries for this contest will be accepted from February 15, 2017, at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time (“PT”) to Monday, May 1, 2017 at 11:59 PT (the “Contest Period”).

The contest is run by the University of the Fraser Valley (“UFV”), 33844 King Road, Abbotsford, BC, Canada V2S 7M8.

 

2. Eligibility

To enter and to be eligible to win, a person must be a student at UFV (registered in at least one course during the 2016/2017 academic year), who has reached the age of majority in their province of residence, at the time of entry, and who is not an employee and/or representative of UFV. The contest is not open to residents of Quebec.

 

3. How to enter and register

This contest is free to enter and requires no purchase of any kind. It does not require entrants to apply for any program at UFV (beyond the eligibility criterion outlined in section 2 above). Applying for a program at UFV does not in any way improve an entrant’s chances of winning this contest. 

During the Contest Period, complete your essay and the entry form as indicated and click on “Submit your essay”.

This will enter you into the contest to win one of the prizes described in section 5 below.

Internet access and a valid email account are required. All fields on the entry form must be completed, unless indicated as optional.

By filling out and submitting the entry form, each participant is given one entry to win the contest.

Each person may only enter the contest once. Any attempts to enter more than once is a violation of the contest rules and may result in disqualification at UFV’s sole discretion. All entries must be received by the end of the Contest Period. Proof of submission does not constitute proof of receipt by UFV.

Use of automated devices is prohibited; automated entries (including but not limited to entries submitted using any robot, script, macro or other automated service) are not permitted and may result in disqualification. Entries become the property of UFV and will not be returned or acknowledged.

 

4. Essay

Entrants’ submissions of conceptual and empirical essays should propose an initiative through which UFV or the Fraser Valley Community can address one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Submissions should develop an original proposal or analyze an existing initiative that has facilitated sustainable social, environmental, and economic development and provide a research based argument for how this initiative can be developed in the target community.

Essays should be between 3,000 to 5,000 words, excluding references, tables, and figures, be written in APA style and adhere to the submission guidelines in section 7 below..

 

5. Prize

There are three prizes available to be won, as follows:

1st prize: $500 UFV Bookstore gift card

2nd prize: $300 UFV Bookstore gift card

3rd prize: $200 UFV Bookstore gift card

The prizes will be awarded to the verified winners, as more fully described in section 6 below. The prizes must be accepted as awarded and may not be substituted, transferred, or redeemed for cash or otherwise; however, UFV reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater monetary value, in cash or otherwise, at its sole discretion, if a prize, or any component of any prize, cannot be awarded for any reason.

Any other costs or expenses associated with the prizes not expressly stated herein as being included in the prize will be the responsibility of the prize winner.

UFV will not replace the prize if it is lost or stolen after it is awarded to the winner. UFV makes no representations or warranties with respect to the prize and any concerns or claims regarding the functioning of the prize should be directed to its manufacturer, if applicable.

 

6. Awarding of the prize

Essays will be evaluated based on: (i) originality, critical and analytical approach; (ii) clarity; and (iii) formatting/APA style compliance, including layout, attention to details, fact/data and references. 

On or around Tuesday, May 16, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. PT at the UFV Abbotsford campus, the result of the evaluation of all eligible prize entries to select three potential prize winners will be announced. 

Odds of winning the prize depends on the total number of eligible essay submissions received during the Contest Period.

The potential winner of each prize will be notified of selection within three business days by email at the email address provided at the time of registration and must respond to notification as directed by UFV.

The prizes will be awarded to the verified winners approximately three weeks after the Contest Period closes.

Prizes will only be delivered to verified winners. To be verified as a winner, the selected entrant must: (i) respond to notification within the time period described by UFV; (ii) if requested by UFV, provide any information or document including identification documents; (iii) sign and return, within the stated time, a release of liability (“the Release”) in which entrant agrees to release and hold harmless UFV, its Board of Governors, officers, employees and agents from and against any and all liabilities, losses, claims, demands, costs and expenses in connection with this contest and the prize, and any prize related activity; and (iv) comply with these official rules.

If a selected entrant cannot be contacted within the time period described above, or fails to: (i) provide identification if requested by UFV; (ii) sign and return the Release within the required time; or (iii) otherwise comply with these official rules; the applicable prize will be forfeited and may be awarded to an alternate entrant, who will be subject to disqualification in the same manner.

 

7. Submission Guidelines

  • Please use APA style, APA ethics code must be followed.
  • Entries must include appropriate appendices/references cited from academic sources.
  • APA template is available here.
  • Authors may have a co-author (limited to two authors -inclusive). Any prize(s) awarded will be split evenly between the two authors
  • Include cover page with title, full name(s), UFV email address, program of study.
  • Header of each page should include: full name(s), UFV student ID and page number.
  • If a participant is collecting primary data, UFV ethics approval is needed.
  • Authors will retain the copyright. However, by submitting a paper, authors do agree that UFV can publish, edit, and reproduce any accepted papers in the format as decided by the University at any given time. No royalty fee or compensation of any nature will be payable.
  • By submitting a paper, authors do agree that UFV can take author’s photo and publish in social media including but not limited to UFVtoday, Facebook, Twitter, or journals, magazines etc.
  • Failure to follow these rules may lead to disqualification from the contest.

 

8. General

(a) To win the prize, an entrant must meet all of the conditions and requirements in these contest rules. If a winner gives false information to UFV, or interferes with the entry process or operation of the contest, he/she may be disqualified from the contest and may be required to return his/her prize.

(b) UFV has no responsibility to any entrant for the entrant’s participation in the contest. If there are any mistakes in the processing of entries or the operation of the contest, or if any entries are lost, destroyed or can’t be read, UFV will not rerun the contest or ask entrants to resubmit their entries. UFV is not responsible for any problems or errors related to the contest.

(c) UFV has no responsibility to any entrant for his/her use of the prize.

(d) By participating in the contest, an entrant agrees that, should he/she win the contest, UFV may use the winner's name and city of residence in announcing the contest winner. 

(e) Your personal information is collected under the authority of section 26(c) of the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act (British Columbia). This information provided to enter this contest will be used only to administer the contest, and for no other reason. Questions about the collection of this information may be directed to Kelly Gardner, Assistant to the Director, UFV School of Business at kelly.gardner@ufv.ca.

(f)Personal information collected from entrants will be used by UFV to provide the entrants, by email, with information about UFV and its various programs. This may include advertising for university programs or event, or stories related to the university.

(g) The decisions of UFV in relation to this contest will be final and binding on all entrants.

(h) UFV reserves the right to cancel, terminate, or suspend this contest, at its discretion, at any time without prior notice.

(i) This contest is subject to all applicable laws of the Province of British Columbia and the laws of Canada, in addition to these contest rules.
