The University College of the Fraser Valley, in cooperation with Coastal Pacific Aviation, offers one-, two-, and four-year aviation training programs. Aviation subjects are taught by Coastal Pacific instructors and college academic courses are taught by instructors at the UCFV Abbotsford campus. Students who successfully complete the one- or two-year programs will receive a joint diploma from the University College of the Fraser Valley and Coastal Pacific Aviation. Students who successfully complete the four-year program will receive a joint degree from UCFV and Coastal Pacific Aviation.

These diploma and degree programs are designed to cover the academic and flying components essential to the preparation of commercial pilots for entry-level positions in the aviation industry in Canada.

The one- and two-year diploma programs consist of training for the commercial licence followed by advanced training generally including multi-engine and instrument training, but with an optional flight instructor rating.

The diploma program objective is to develop pilots who are well trained in the manual skills required to fly an aircraft, who have a comprehensive academic background to help them understand complex aircraft systems, and who have an understanding of human factors and the interpersonal skills required to work effectively in a team.

The four-year degree program takes students through the private licence, commercial licence, and advanced training, and meets the academic requirements for the UCFV Bachelor of Business Administration.

The four-year degree program objective is to provide students with the skills required to fly an aircraft, to prepare students academically and professionally for the business of aviation, and to train students for leadership and teamwork in the industry.

The programs are disciplined and require a high standard of academic and flight performance. We recognize that enrolling in a professional flight training program is a serious investment. Program requirements are meant to protect the applicant’s investment by enhancing the professional environment in which they train.

The academic and flying programs provide the essential formal background necessary to qualify for professional positions whether in industry or the Ministry of Transport departments which regulate aviation.

Entrance requirements — One-year diploma program

1. C+ or better in Math 11 or Principles of Math 11, Physics 11, and English 12. (Math 12, Physics 12, Computer Science, and French or other second language are recommended.)

2. Completion of 10 appropriate university-level courses with a minimum C average, including at least one course in each of the following subject areas: Math, Physics, and English or Communications. One or more of these courses may be taken as part of the one-year program.

3. Students must have completed the private pilot flight test within six months prior to entering the program, or have completed the private pilot flight test within one year with a minimum of 10 hours flying time within the six months preceding the first day of classes. Students who do not meet these requirements must complete a flight evaluation with Coastal Pacific Aviation or designate. Students must also have completed the private pilot written examination within the 12 months preceding the first day of classes or be required to achieve a minimum of 60% on an entrance exam equivalent to the private pilot written exam.

4. Current Transport Canada Category 1 medical certification.

5. In addition to the above, applicants must satisfy an entrance evaluation which includes an interview(s), and an assessment of references.

Entrance requirements — Two-year diploma program

1. B.C. secondary school graduation, or equivalent. Students who have completed a high school equivalency program will also be considered but may have to complete the specific entrance requirements below.

2. C+ or better in Principles of Math 11, Physics 11, and English 12. (Math 12, Physics 12, Computer Science and French, or other second language, are recommended.) Students with minor academic deficiencies may still be considered but may be required to complete preparatory courses in addition to the Aviation program.

3. Students must have completed the private pilot flight test within six months prior to entering the program, or have completed the private pilot flight test within one year with a minimum of 10 hours flying time within the six months preceding the first day of classes. Students who do not meet these requirements must complete a flight evaluation with Coastal Pacific Aviation or designate. Students must also have completed the private pilot written examination within the 12 months preceding the first day of classes or be required to achieve a minimum of 60% on an entrance exam equivalent to the private pilot written exam.

5. In addition to the above, applicants must also satisfy an entrance evaluation which includes an interview(s), a qualifying exam, and an assessment of references.

Note: Basic keyboard/typing skills, although not essential, are useful in Computer Information Systems and Communications courses.

Entrance requirements — Four-year degree program

Note: Students who hold a private pilot licence prior to entering the first year of the degree program will be required to:

• enrol and successfully complete Aviation 161 Private Pilot Theory in the first semester of the program
• successfully complete a simulator evaluation based on three hours dual instruction and two hours solo practice in the first semester of the program
• have completed the private pilot flight test within six months prior to entering the program, or have completed the private pilot flight test within one year and a minimum of 10 hours flying time within the six months preceding the first day of classes September, or complete a flight evaluation with Coastal Pacific Aviation or designate
• complete a continuation flying course throughout the first year of the program.

Students who hold a private pilot licence and are eligible to enter the second year of the degree program will be required to have:

• completed the Canadian private pilot flight test within six months prior to entering the program, or have completed the private pilot flight test within one year with a minimum of 10 hours flying time within the six months preceding the first day of classes. Students who do not meet these requirements must complete a flight evaluation with Coastal Pacific Aviation or designate. Students must also have completed the private pilot written examination within the 12 months preceding the first day of classes or be required to achieve a minimum of 60% on an entrance exam equivalent to the private pilot written exam.

High school graduates

1. B.C. secondary school graduation, or equivalent. Students who have completed a high school equivalency program will also be considered but may have to complete the specific entrance requirements below.

2. C+ or better in Principles of Math 12, Physics 11, and English 12. (Accounting 11, Physics 12, Computer Science and French, or other second language, are recommended.)

3. Current Transport Canada Category 1 medical certification.

1. Completion of the UCFV Aviation diploma program within the previous 5 years (10 if applicant has a current commercial pilot licence), including the following courses or equivalents:

• five other courses which satisfy the BBA (Aviation) program requirements. Consult the Business Administration department for appropriate course selection.

2. A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.67 (B-) calculated separately for academic and flight-related courses, and no diploma courses with grades lower than a C.

3. Principles of Mathematics 12 (C+ or better), or UCFV MATH 095 (C+ or better) or MATH 109 (B or better), or MATH 110 (C+ or better), or a BMPT score of 67% or better (see Note 1), or equivalent. MATH 111 and 115 also meet this requirement but have Math 12 as a prerequisite.

4. Current Transport Canada Category 1 medical certification.

5. In addition to the above, applicants must also satisfy an entrance evaluation which includes an interview(s), and an assessment of references.

Note 1: The Business Mathematics Proficiency Test (BMPT) is available for students to determine their proficiency in Mathematics 12 for UCFV Business programs only. Students who receive a passing grade on the BMPT will be considered to have met the Math 12 admission requirement for UCFV Business programs (but will not have Math 12 credit). Students considering taking this test should contact the Business department for outlines, procedures and exam dates.

How to apply

The one-year program starts in January and the two-year and four-year programs start in September.

As seats in the program are limited, students should apply as early as possible. Initial applications should be sent to Coastal Pacific Aviation. Applications should be completed prior to April 30 for enrolment in September, and prior to September 30 for enrolment in the one-year program in January. Late applications will be considered if space permits.

1. Submit the $60*  non-refundable application fee along with your UCFV application for admission form and the Coastal Pacific Aviation application form, to Coastal Pacific Aviation, 30575 Approach Dr., Abbotsford Airport, Abbotsford, B.C. V2T 6H5 — Attention Aviation Program Coordinator.

*Fees stated are in effect for 2000/01 and are subject to change for 2001/02.

Application forms are available from Student Services and Coastal Pacific Aviation (see the Admission chart for a complete list of application dates and general information).

Additional documents required for a complete application:

• proof of B.C. secondary school completion or equivalent, and transcript (or interim transcript) showing grade achievement as per entrance requirements
• a medical certificate showing a Transport Canada Category 1 Medical.
• applicants for the one-year program must also submit proof of completion of 10 university-level courses or interim transcript reflecting the above.

2. Qualified applicants will be interviewed by Coastal Pacific during March or April for September enrolment, or September or October for the January one-year program enrolment.

3. After evaluations have been made, interviewed candidates will receive a letter stating the results. Candidates being offered a seat will receive a confirming letter, outlining registration details, starting dates, and aviation supplies required and an enrolment agreement. Prior to acceptance the candidate may be required to provide proof of financial ability to pay for educational expenses.

4. Any requests for transfer of academic course equivalencies should be made to the Admissions and Records office; requests for transfer of aviation- or flight-related courses should be made directly to Coastal Pacific Aviation.

Location

Academic courses will be held on the UCFV campuses. Aviation classroom instruction, flight training and simulator training will be conducted at Coastal Pacific Aviation, Abbotsford Airport.

Dates

One-year Aviation diploma program

Instruction at Coastal Pacific and UCFV begins in January. UCFV academic courses will be taken January to mid-April and September to mid-December. Aviation theory and flight instruction will continue throughout the year.

Two-year Aviation diploma program

Instruction at Coastal Pacific and UCFV begins in September. UCFV courses will normally be completed by mid-April and flight instruction and flight time may continue through May. Coastal Pacific’s summer program for students who need to complete their private pilot licence is offered during the months of July and August and must be completed prior to program commencement.

Note: The aviation portion of the two-year Aviation diploma program must be completed within four years. All other graduation requirements must be completed within seven years.

Four-year Aviation degree program

Instruction at Coastal Pacific and UCFV begins in September. UCFV courses will normally be completed by mid-April and flight instruction and flight time may continue through May.

Note: The department requires years one to four to be completed within 10 years if the program is taken on a part-time basis. Students who completed the Aviation diploma and are returning to complete the BBA (Aviation) at UCFV after an absence, will be allowed seven years to complete years three and four of the degree.

Residency requirement

To receive the BBA (Aviation), students must fulfil specific elements of the program at UCFV. A minimum of 34 credits, including seven upper-level business and eight 400-level aviation courses, must be taken at UCFV. These include the following:

Academic performance

To qualify for an aviation diploma, students must obtain a minimum GPA of 2.0 (a C grade) in each semester as well as cumulatively. Students whose cumulative GPA and/or semester GPA falls below 2.0 during their program are subject to academic warning.

To qualify for an aviation degree, students must obtain a cumulative grade point average of 2.67 (B- average) in both flight-related and academic courses in order to remain in the program, continue on to the next year, and to graduate. Additionally, a grade of at least C for each course (academic and flight-related) is required in order to be awarded the degree. Students whose cumulative grade point average and/or semester grade point average falls below 2.67 during their program are subject to academic warning and/or removal from the program.

Course repeats

A course may be repeated in order to improve the cumulative GPA. However, you may not register for the same course more than twice.

No more than five repeated courses will be permitted.

BBA (Aviation) graduation requirements

1. Cumulative program GPA of 2.67 or higher (over four years).
2. No courses with less than a ‘C’ grade.
3. Completion of all required courses and residency requirements.
4. No more than five courses retaken within the BBA (Aviation) program.

Fee estimates are in effect for 2000/01 and are subject to change for 2001/02.

UCFV fee summary

UCFV fees will be paid at the university college, and are approximately $400 per semester (three courses or nine credits).

Note: Fees are given for last year. New fees are usually set each May.

Coastal Pacific Aviation fee summary

Coastal Pacific fees will be paid at the Abbotsford Airport to Coastal Pacific Aviation. Flight training fees are subject to change and vary for each individual.

Approximate total fees for the diploma programs are $33,000 and approximate total fees for the degree program are $60,000. Contact the program coordinator at Coastal Pacific to obtain a current fee summary.

Students accepted to the program are required to wear a uniform. The initial cost for shirts, slacks, sweater, jacket, and ties is approximately $425. Additional items may be required throughout the course.

Note 1: Students who select the instructor option would complete AV 451: Theory — Instructor, and AV 452: Flight Instructor Practicum, instead of AV 421 and AV 422.

Note 2: Students intending to complete the BBA (Aviation) should take BUS 160 or CIS 110; and MATH 106.

Alternate core courses are available for students interested in continuing on for a degree after completing the diploma program.

Second-year course selection for the two-year program (a total of six including Physics) will require aviation coordinator approval. Students are expected to pursue subjects of interest and to broaden their academic development in preparation for non-flying responsibilities they may face.

Students who have completed college or university courses similar to those listed above may be able to transfer credits. Contact the aviation coordinator for more information and refer to the UCFV’s transfer credit policy.

Although program requirements are shown in four semesters they do not have to be taken consecutively. It is necessary, however, to take each semester’s aviation theory concurrently with that semester’s flying and simulator sessions.

Co-operative Education option

A co-operative education option is being developed for the BBA Aviation program. This will offer students the opportunity to obtain paid career-related work experience during their education at UCFV.
